so I really screwed up......

I don’t think that there was a medical condition that the father had - he just told the D to say there was a family medical emergency.

I believe he said that when he got the daughter’s call, he was at the doctor’s office being seen for an urgent medical issue.

I went back through and read all of the posts. He didn’t say it in the original post but later on he says that he was at the nurse’s station at work, not in the doctor’s office, and that he has a heart condition. My H has one as well and has been hospitalized a number of times so I understand the fear. I actually concealed a week long hospitalization over the summer from all but my oldest son - the other kids were away at camp and I saw no need to worry them. Nonetheless, there was really nothing the girl could have done unless the school was close by their home. Perhaps the dad should have texted her back instead of picking up - hi, can’t talk, what’s going on? This could have given him a moment to think about what to tell her.

I stand by my original statement that the girl doesn’t seem ready to be an RA. It’s not meant as an insult. I didn’t encourage my second son, who is an Eagle Scout, to become an RA because I didn’t think he had the right personality type at the time. Being an RA is not for everyone. I would never have gotten hired when I was in school.

As for the lying, I think OP has realized that it wasn’t the right way to start off a potential employer-employee relationship for his D.

I would be shocked if one of my kids called to ask me for advice because they were late for an appointment. They deal with those day-to-day things on their own. Or without my help anyway.

When I read your comment, my first reaction was to agree. Then, it occurred to me that perhaps an RA position is very important to this family for financial reasons and that the girl panicked excessively on the thought that she might not be able to pay for her room/board the next year. That makes it a little more understandable - my D was in that position in that she would have had to take out unsub loans if she hadn’t been hired as an RA. Nonetheless, I still think that anyone who panics over a relatively simple issue isn’t RA material.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
At this point, I think the OP has received all the advice he needs. Regardless, he has not been here in 10 days, so I think we need to move on. Closing.
