So I'm pretty sure I've been rejected from CSULB...

Sorry for spamming the UC Transfer forum. I put this on the regular transfer forum too but figured I'll find more California transfers in here.

I've been calling their admission status line, and it's changed from "Your application has been received" to "An admission decision has been made." I've been reading past discussions and from what I can gather, everyone who's been accepted has immediately heard, "Congratulations, you've been admitted to the such-and-such program for fall 2011" while everyone who's simply heard that "an admission decision has been made" usually gets rejected.

Has anyone been accepted after hearing "an admission decision has been made?" I can't call the office until Monday.

I have to say I'm kinda shocked. I have a 3.7 GPA from the two community colleges I've attended, I've taken honors classes, and I've fulfilled all of the requirements. The thing is, I moved from southern California to the Bay Area last fall. I was enrolled at Fullerton College, and I think if I'd stayed there I would have gotten in, but now I'm at the City College of San Francisco.

I know they favor local students, but it's kind of silly, isn't it? I've heard of high school students getting in with 2.9 GPAs because they live down the street while 4.0 out-of-state students are rejected. Someone from a previous forum got into NYU even though they were rejected from CSULB. Someone else got into Cal Poly SLO.

I got into Cal State Fullerton (with honors) and Sacramento and San Francisco State. I'm still waiting to hear from Berkeley and UC Irvine. I really think I still have a decent shot at them (I have a lot of extracurriculars and volunteering that CSULB didn't consider, and my essay should have been good too). But this is a little unnerving.

Has anyone else heard from CSU Long Beach?

First of all, I want to clarify that this forum is the correct forum that you should be posting Csu’s. UC stands for university of California, so it doesn’t hurt to include California state university, too.

And secondly, when you get this message: “an admission decision has been made” that doesn’t mean that you are going to be rejected.

I’ve received that message too when I applied for UCR in high school, and I got in shortly after.

Don’t worry and don’t stress too much buddy! Your GPA looks great and there couldn’t be more that you could have done, so it’s not your fault that they are basing their admission on how far you are from their school.

Best of luck!

The message doesn’t mean anything. The school might have changed it because they are currently processing the applicants.

The CSUs are extraordinarily selective to applicants when they live outside of their region and it is not unheard of for students to be accepted into UCB or UCLA and being rejected from CSUs. With that being said, you’re guaranteed a spot at UCI with a 3.7 as long that you didn’t screw up on the UC’s other requirements.

@banhbaochien Thanks. I didn’t think “an admission decision has been made” was a death sentence initially, but from what I’ve heard on previous forums, most people who are admitted immediately hear “Congratulations, you’ve been admitted” on the automated system. But hey, I won’t know until I try to contact the office on Monday.

@feedayeen Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better. :-)

Called this morning-- I was in fact denied. I think we can conclude that the “admission decision has been made” message (when given over the phone at CSULB) does mean a rejection.

:( That local requirement is really strange, especially since you’re probably in at UCI and beyond.

Best of luck for the future!

how is that strange? CSUs serve their communities that even 2.5gpa from a CCC can get a bachelor’s.

I have a 3.0 & I live on the same street as CSULB and I got denied.

@BostonCrmPie I was upset at first, because rejection is not a nice feeling, but I totally understand the reasoning. I’ve gotten into three colleges so far-- but a student with a 2.5 from LBCC isn’t going to have all those opportunities.

@Samyrahlee Whaaaat? Seriously? What’s your major?? Have you completed the CSU requirements?

Yea I called and they said I didn’t get in, then I got a letter and it said even tho I completed all the IGETC requirements & pre-reqs I wasn’t competitive enough (g.p.a wise). But im 100% sure it had something to do with my major being film.

I imagine that would be a pretty competitive major at long beach. I’m sorry. :-/

They seem to be really selective this year. Did you get into another school?

Well I got into SDSU and CSULB (backups) today as an anthro major but was denied to Northridge with a 4.0! Go figure… I don’t know what’s up with the cal state thing.

I got into Fullerton & Northridge, but I’m really waiting on Ucsb & uci…I never intended on going to lb it was just because the app was free…that school has no standards for admissions, it’s like their picking names out of hats.

I got into CSUF (my top choice), got denied at CSULB, and I’m waiting to get rejected from SDSU and CSU San Marcos (not in either service area, so I’m sure it’s a slim chance for me). I agree that CSULB has been insanely selective this year. I wasn’t planning on going there, but regardless, the rejection definitely did hurt when it arrived.

I definitely know how you’re feeling, melaniedear.

@nerdasaurus Honestly, i think CSULB gets a lot more apps than any of the other CSUs. You probably have a way better chance than you think you do at the schools outside your area. I got into fullerton, Sacramento, and SFSU.

@ucihopeful oh, I think northridge is similarly odd when it comes to admissions/denials. Granted, I’m totally prejudiced against that school because I dated a guy who went there that was an absolute buffoon. But I’ve heard of many a good student getting rejected while many a moron gets admitted.

By the way, said buffoon also turned down admission to UCI in favor of CSUN. I couldn’t believe that. Have you heard from UCI yet? I’m still waiting on them too… I’m sure you’re in with that gpa though. :)

I’m a little skeptic how someone with a 4.0 does not get into any Cal State. Did you take easy classes or have no work/volunteer/athletics? In this day and age I thought if you had a 4.0 you could almost get into any school, especially CSU. Someone enlighten me on this, because this will be a rude awakening for me.

If you live outside of the service area of a school (in my case, if you apply to long beach and didn’t go to long beach city college or orange coast college) then your chances for admission are greatly decreased. I would imagine it’s the same case with northridge, because they also get a lot of applications.

However, a 4.0 will get you into most schools. Many other cal states don’t get as many applicants from inside their service area so they take qualified applicants from anywhere. Also, CSUs don’t judge you on your volunteer work.

UCs are different. You don’t get as much local priority, and you do have to have pretty good grades and volunteer work and extracurriculars to get in.

Here’s my take. You said you got denied at Cal State Northridge with a 4.0, so if you could not get into CSUN what more a UC?? You get were I’m going with this? It’s pretty strange a Cal State will reject a 4.0 even if they are not in the service area. I thought as long as you are in California you have a pretty good shot even.
