So I'm pretty sure I've been rejected from CSULB...

Yeah I understand, but they have different criteria. They would rather take a local person with a less-than-perfect GPA. UCs are the opposite.

Yeah, at first I couldn’t believe it when I saw the letter in the mail. It said something along the lines of “We’ve carefully reviewed your file many times and have decided that based on your qualifications you are not the right type of student for CSUN. We wish you luck in all of your future endeavors… blah blah blah” I didn’t know to take it as an insult or a compliment.
After getting the letter the first thing that ran through my mind was who else wouldn’t want me if even Northridge said no. I mean not only am I a 4.0, but a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, completing the honors program, IGETC certified, Golden 4 completed, secretary of the school’s anthro club, member of Christian Club, over 500 hours of community service in the past 4 years, taken both french/spanish 4, well rounded in all areas of humanities, art and social sciences, with a job, extremely low income (EFC = 0), single parent family, minority with plans of becoming a teacher applying to a “dead” and unimpacted major. I’ve done everything a school looks for except deworm orphans in Somalia. Don’t know where I went wrong…

I’m not sure what else I could’ve done, but i just keep reminding myself that I only applied there because I got to apply to four for free so I chose CSUF, SDSU, CSULB and CSUN because of their proximity to UCI, UCSD and UCLA (in case my fiancee got into those and I didn’t). I was accepted to CSUF honors, CSULB and SDSU with a university scholarship of $6,000 a year; quite flattering for cash-strapped schools. Oh well, it was just Northridge (no offense to any fans/hopefuls).

. . .

There is no way in hell that you won’t get into every one of those schools. And despite what I said earlier, I’m truly shocked that CSUN didn’t take you. No matter how far away you are. Their loss. Honestly.

I got waitlisted for CSULB, so i had to settle for UCLA; woe is me.

seriously though, CSULB has some ■■■■■■■■ admissions processes. I wouldn’t take them seriously. My friend got waitlisted, and then admitted though too, so it isn’t terrible.

i do understand the predicament for the calstates though. They got their funding cut by $500 mil too, so they’re being extremely selective with who they accept and reject.

All the more reason to stick with UCs… :)

The real question is what does a student that is in the service area bring that a person that is not in the service area doesn’t? It has to be purely monetary. The state must reward the university by admitting within the service area. Otherwise this admission process is run by a bunch of idiots, quite frankly.

Yes, Conceptj, CSUs are required to favor local students. It’s in their bylaws.

I guess I just didn’t realize how much interest CSULB had when I applied. And maybe I kind of figured that “favoring local students” meant that if two students have 3.7s the local student will get it over the non-local one. But admissions have been so restricted due to the budget cuts that I guess it now means local students get in and 4.0 non-local students get rejected!

So guys. After all that, I DID get in. Turns out they overlooked my math class!

However, when I heard the “admission decision has been made” message, my status was technically denied, till they fixed it. So I’m betting that’s still what it means.

Congratulations, melaniedear! I’m
glad that everything worked out in the end.

Thanks! Me too!

Nerdasaurus, did you ever call to find out the reason for your denial? Make sure they didn’t overlook something on your app too?

How do you check your admission status? Whenever i call the line, they always ask me for a pin number that I never had to set up

Are you positive you never set one up? I didn’t remember setting one up either, but when I tried a common pin number I use for everything, it worked. It must have been a part of the application process.

I got something from them requesting my transcripts saying I moved on to the next round of admissions decisions. Does anyone know when the next round or final round of decisions will be made? Did any of you guys get that too or you just got in/didn’t get in? My major is film (impacted).

That means you’ll probably get in as long as everything on your transcripts checks out. I’m not sure if that’s the case with an impacted major though.

@melaniedear: I didn’t call, but I inferred that my GPA was probably below the threshold for non-local students. I live in-state, but outside of CSULB’s service area.

So I got that message as well when I called and I was shocked because I do go to LBCC and Cerritos City College and have a GPA of 3.2. My major is Electrical Engineering. So looks like I got rejected by CSULB and UC Riverside so far. I am still waiting on UCI, UCSD and UCSB. But if CSULB and UCR rejected me, I doubt I’ll get in the others :'(

1) Did you take at least 30 units
at LBCC? Believe it or not I don’t think Cerritos is in the direct service area.
2) CALL the number they listed today and find out the reason for your rejection. If it was something stupid (like with mine-- my transcripts didn’t show my courses in progress and they thought I wasn’t taking math) you can appeal.
3) Most importantly, don’t give up hope on the other schools. CSULB is finicky and they reject people for weird reasons. You still have a good shot at your other schools.
