...because she couldn't picture herself living in Goleta for four years after visiting for orientation, and also because her parents are in debt and can't afford the tuition.

I'm sad that we won't be rooming together anymore (we put down each other's perm numbers on the housing preferences), and it's kind of late to change anything. Will I be assigned to a random roommate now? I'm pretty nervous :(

JeffR88, I think they spread it out over July and August.

Yeah, you’ll probably have a random roommate, unless you pay the extra to stay in a single. Hopefully it won’t be that bad. Chances are, the other person will be as nervous about it as you.

Don’t sweat the random roomate thing. You know there are tons of people just like you wondering about who they will end up with. It’s half the excitement of going away to school-everyone leaves with a roomate story-some good some-well, good stories! 3 of my sons had the mystery roomate and all did just fine. One roomed the following year with his roomate (at UCSB) the others just remained in contact. You can always make a roomate swap later in the year if it’s a terrible match.

Think about the kind of people UCSB attracts: social and intelligent teenagers who like having a good time but also work just as hard. I think that the chances of ending up with a weird social outcast in ucsb are pretty slim. You’ll be assigned a random roomate, but it’s nothing to worry about. :)
