So now that I'm accepted, what is the best housing?!?

Hey guys,

Thankfully I got past the part I was educated about with Michigan as I received my acceptance Friday. Now to the part I'm completely uneducated about... What is the best housing on Central Campus? I know no one really wants to live on North and the that South Quad is Honors housing, but what dorm is most preferable?

mosher-jordan hall is probably the best dorm for freshman. but it’s largely reserved for the learning community students (michigan research community & women in science and engineering), but there are a small group of students who just lucked out in the housing lottery & got to live in the hall without being in any learning community.

My tier list would be:

West/south quad
Hill
North Campus.

The hill area doesn’t require a bus ride, however is not as close to the important parts of campus as west or south quad.

Generally rooms on the hill are smaller than on central. When in markley last year my room was 11x12. In west quad, its now 17x12.

is central mostly upper clansmen though?

couzins hall is extremely nice and just redone. Not like you get to pick your dorm though. They ask what area and you may or may not get what you ask for. About 60% of all freshmen end up on North campus. My d is in West and it is very close to all of her classes. She does do a lot of walking to the hill to see friends, hang out and eat at mojo where they claim the food is better. East is going to be closed for renovations so chances of being on central next year go down.

yes rooms are huge in west quad
sinks are even is some of the rooms

Your best chance to get on central campus is to request a “double” and make your order of preference for housing 1. Hill Neighborhood, 2. Bursley, 3. Baits/Northwood. Most freshmen on central end up in Markley/South Quad/MoJo/Couzens. South Quad is mainly honors though so if you’re not in that you won’t get it. Markley has absolutely tiny rooms but it’s on the hill and close to campus (and even closer to frat houses). Markley is also known as the most social dorm and I can confirm that reputation (I live there now). North Campus from what I’ve heard this year is mostly engineers/art students/music students (who have all their classes up there), but some LSA people get stuck up there too. Of course north campus isn’t the worst thing in the world, Bursley is awesome and they have a lot of REALLY nice facilities up there.

If you have any more specific questions I’m sure someone here can answer them.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I don’t know if I understand correctly though… You pick the location of your dorm, but you can’t pick your specific dorm?

where are you from in fl?

go to college ******* and type in university of michigan housing to get some opinions on housing.

guess i can’t recommend other sites on here…

i live in South Florida

Congrats – Given the closing of Baits and EQuad – starting with this incoming class, housing preference will be given to those students who have spent the least amount of time in university housing. This is so the older kids are encouraged to go off-campus rather than sophomores. So, put your first choice and hope for the best. My daughter lives in WQuad, but she’s an athlete. I was surprised at the number of freshman living there who are not athletes. Try for it. It’s very central.

Mojo is the best Hall for a Freshman. Then West/South Quad and Markeley come second. I’d say Bursley afterwords. The rest (Baits, Northwood, Couzens, etc) is all a matter a preference.

The best dorm on Campus is North Quad. Freshman CANNOT get in, sorry. Also I’d have to say Easy quad is the worst…

^You’re out of your mind.

This is the correct order:

West Quad/South Quad (I prefer West)
Hill
North Campus

People saying MoJo is the best are crazy. With West Quad you’re 5 minutes from everything and have huge rooms.

SQuad’s dining hall > WQuad’s IMO. West Quad has bigger rooms though.

Yes but I take a long time to get out of bed and the 3 or 4 minutes that I save by being in West Quad often saves me haha. Plus with West Quad you’re connected to the Union which is really convenient.

South and West quad have by far the best locations given East quad is closing. Squad’s dining hall is better than West’s but the rooms are basically the same. Mojo and Couzens have the best facilities but they’re a lot farther from the diag and especially the union than south or west. It’s not like you get to pick unless you’re in a learning community though.

south quad is so fun. Great times. I lived in baits frosh year. horrid times. Truly a god awful place. Baits II (where i was) is still open, so don’t think you are out of the blue. From my perspective, if a frosh gets anywhere but baits they are extremely lucky :P.
I say south quad >> west quad. Squad is more social. I remember hearing somewhere that having red brick walls lends to a less social atmosphere, dunno if its true, but wquad has red brick walls. I live in wquad and squad is miles better in my op.
any frosh who does not get placed on north misses out on the rite of passages i believe all frosh should go through such as riding the vomit comet haha.

I’m hoping to either be on the hill or on central campus. If you want to be on the hill, mojo, couzens, and alice lloyd (reopening after renovations) are probably best since they have been recently renovated and have better amenities such as a/c. If you want to be central, west quad or south quad would be great.
