So this again: Engineering or accounting?

Jan2013 - make sure you have a fall back for your career ambition. You are not CEO material.

ChrisTKD: you have never been a CEO so you dont know what you are talking about. Jack Welch is my hero and if he has done it then I could do it too. Oh by the way, Engineering rules.

According to the BLS (and a dozen of other sites) the median salary for engineering is higher than the median salary for accounting, but the maximum earning potential for accounting is MUCH higher than engineering. Keep in mind, though, never go into anything for the money. If you love what you do, you’ll be better at it. And if you’re good at something and passionate about it, money will find you. Also, it’s easier to get an engineering job than an accounting one because there are less engineering majors graduating.

Jan2013, I humbly suggest you (a) talk to people devastated by Jack’s policies and antics, especially in places like Cincinnati or Louisville, and (b) talk to someone who owns GE appliances. No slight intended, but let’s just say his peons and customers were not thrilled with him.

that escalated quickly…
thanks guys for the input. I guess either way I have to work hard and endure some tough time. Funny thing is that although I have good grades I realize that I severely lack confidence. A lot of my classmates plan to go to engineering and they have much lower grades than me, but here I am kinda intimidated by engineering as ppl describe it as a difficult major. Anyways I might try it out and see how it goes  How’s the job perspective for female engineers these days?

Don’t be afraid of hard work. Any goal worth having requires hard work! Don’t be put off or intimidated by what others say about how hard it is. If you are reasonably intelligent and willing to put in the effort and are smart enough to get help when you need it, you will be fine.
This study has more info than you might be looking for, but I think you will find it interesting…

turbo93: nobody is perfect. Well perhaps Mother Teresa…another person also who has no perfect records, Bill Clinton. I like him as he is smart and knows what he wants. Nobody is perfect even you too right TURBO93 or not…?..I know about Jack Welch and his antics too. But, that’s not the point…the point is he is the true manly-man Engineering guy who has climbed up the corporate ladder without having MBA or Accounting Degree.

Lastly, if Jack Welch could do it and I could too…

HyperionOmega: If money is the motivation then why there have been topics in this forum talking about salary, etc. And also lots of times, the CS guys in this forum always bring about the salary 80K after getting CS degree or 100K for doing internship at Google, Yahoo etc?

Why are they doing that? why are they quoting the dollar figures?

More importantly, is that wrong if the motivation is money in looking for job, career, etc?..IF IT IS WRONG then would you accept an offer after getting a degree in engineering for a job paying 27K per year?..only you can answer this.
