So What are my chances?

I am a sophomore currently and just received my PSAT and ACT scores recently. On the PSAT I received a fairly decent score but I think I could have done much better. I got a 52 on writing, 47 on reading, and a poor score of 44 on math. I think that with work the math will improve. In regards to ACT, I received a composite of 24, with a 26 in English, 20 in math, 27 in reading, and a 24 in science. In average of my first year and a half of high school I am carrying an average gpa of 3.4 un-weighted. In your guys honest opinion what would it take me to get into a very selective schools such as ivy league and other prestigious universities. Is it even attainable still or should I just focus into getting into state colleges? Thanks

What’s your weighted GPA?

I believe its in the realm of a 4.0-4.6, my school has not given me that info but that is a rough calculation.

Also, sorry I forgot to include my course load not sure if it matters, currently taking one AP, which is AP US History,. The rest are honors excluding my one standard being Geometry.

To be honest, your scores are well below average. I suggest you don’t submit that ACT score and work on improving your SATs instead. And it all depends on your class rank too. I know my sophomore year a lot of people took AP History, as it is the most elected AP course to be taken in the nation. If you were to apply to a colleges right now, I would definitely recommend state colleges. But don’t worry! You still have a whole year to prepare and don’t forget - you never know if you could get lucky!

In all honesty, the chance of you getting into an Ivy or similar top tier university is highly unlikely. While you can probably get your GPA (with straight As) up to a 3.6-3.7 (still very low for such schools), your prep test scores are not indicative that you can score what you would need to (32+ ACT, 2100+ SAT) to be considered at these schools. Keep working hard and you’ll have no trouble getting into a good school.
