I'm not sure what kind of question this is. This is either the question that everybody asks so often that we're all just sick of hearing it, or the kind of question that nobody ever asks because the answer is impossible to obtain. Well, I'm just going to throw it out there, just in case. So really, for undergraduates, across all majors, what is the benchmark? I'd imagine it's somewhere in the 3.0s; it doesn't seem likely that it would be in the 2.0s. Beyond that, I dare not venture a guess, since it might bias the people who come here to estimate. But anybody actually have a real number to this?

Look at the distribution of acceptances into majors based on GPA. That can give you a good indication of what the “average” GPA is.

I would venture a guess that the average GPA is around 3.4-3.5.

The average is around a 3.2. Those average acceptance GPAs include those from community colleges and other universities – they drive the average up.

lol not saying it’s impossible but 3.5 sounds like an overshot.
in almost every class i’ve taken, the average is a 3.0, with some being lower (ie: chem 2.6)

Remember that ‘acceptances’ into majors are probably GPAs that don’t include open majors. In some open majors, you need a 2.0-2.5 to be admitted.
