When do admisions officers start reading applications?

Depends on the school and when you applied. For most RD schools, it is around now.

do they wait till they get your mid-year in?

or have they started reading regardless of that and just add the mid-year into the file when it arrives?

I've been wondering the same thing, but I'm sure it varies.

Some just start reading even without the mid-year. I got an email from an admissions officer complimenting me on my essay and my mid-year report hadn't been sent yet. But then, it also depends on that particular college I guess.

But what if you submitted your RD app way, way early? They still haven't started reading them?

tttony- wow. I'm curious- what was your essay about and what college was that?

I can't believe we're playing the waiting game now. It's so frustrating.

Mine was about my euro teacher; I thought it was somewhat cliche but apparently it wowed her. I'm not going to reveal the school just because she may be around, as my username pretty much gives away my name and I just recently corresponded with her. :D

Do you think some decisions have already been made?

Like, could I have already been rejected, waitlisted, or denied by now?

It's just an interesting sentiment.

Yes. For prep school, which is somewhat similar to private school admissions, about 92% of decisions have been made.

They have already eliminated countless applications and for those who got likely letters they are "for sure" about you guys.

The applications that are left will be one of the last batches they will be reading or people who they do not know, those people may be lucky enough to make the wait list.

I was speaking with a Princeton admissions officer and I will share some of the things I learned. Certain spots are taken before the process even starts and another batch are taken around October... During the interviews. It is like Varsity Hockey, especially the goaltender. The coach knows who is going to be his goaltender before tryouts. This usually applies to legacies, donators (usually legacies), and other UBER hooked applicants. Around late February/March time most unhooked candidates will have their fate set.

^^^^^^^:( That just sounds so scary...

I know. It is really scary, I guess we just need to have the wherewithal to deal with the wait. While attending Harvard my father learned a lot about the admission process. The admissions officers know what they want the next year and they will be looking for people with that trait, that is what defines "hook". I am sure 10% of applicants are cut off the bat (Harvard officer once said that about 87% of the people are qualified) after that it becomes cutthroat.

The Princeton admission guy said that in a few weeks the undecided ones will be wavering from either WL/acceptance or WL/rejection (more in the latter, unfortunately).

They have been reading for a loooong time. UVa even posted on its blog that it started reading RD apps prior to the Jan 1 due date.
