I'm taking regular chem, but it feels like an AP. Our homework for the weekend (though due this Wednesday) is to write both the complete and ionic equations for over 70 reactions, and balance them at the same time!

Now I really hate science, and the only reason why I'm not enjoying myself in digital photography right now is that the college I want to go to requires 4 science credits. This class is making me miserable, and frankly I don't give a rats hairy "bottom" about anything I'm supposed to be learning in it.

So people, those of you who think the same as me, how do you cope with all the crap we have to do in this course?

^I loooooove IB Chem HL but yeah it’s tough. The labs are a pain, I never score well on those, and kinetics just kicked my ass. I was alright with the bonding stuff though, if I remember correctly, that unit was last year for me.

Once you get the hang of balancing equations it will go really fast. Which is probably why you were assigned 70 of them.

I’m having the same problem!!
Our chem teacher is going at an extremely fast rate…We are 2 months ahead of all the other chemistry classes…
And what makes my situation even worse is the fact that he doesn’t teach very well;instead of going over stuff we don’t understand, he hands us 10 page problem packets -_-

WHAT?! How dare you question the might that is CHEMISTRY?!

Honestly, chemistry is one of those subjects where practice makes perfect. Chemistry really clicks for people in college because for every chemistry class you take, your understanding is increased exponentially. It just takes time getting used to some of the weird aspects of chemistry.

Heh, I just skimmed to the book, passed the exam, and called it quits on chemistry forever. Don’t even plan to take it in college. I won’t say I hated it, but I agree that physics is better.

The Chemistry situation at my school is really strange.

As far as AP goes - nearly everyone in our class thought to be a rather easy AP test, and to our surprise it’s widely regarded not to be. But I think we all loved it.

That being said, non-AP chem is derp-tier to the utmost. Nearly everyone who has any sense of science hates it. It took AP chem about a quarter to cover what they did in the whole year.

Strange…I understand AP Chem ten times more than I understand AP Physics.

I don’t know what grade you’re in, but Chem can be hard given certain circumstances. I took Honors Chem sophomore year and it was brutal. Everything was so vague, explanations by the teacher were pointless, and the textbook made it even more confusing. Now that I’m taking AP Chem, everything is defined much better. And looking back to when ionic equations and the like were impossible, I can only wonder why AP Chem is easier than Honors Chem…

So yeah, don’t give up on Chem. It’s pretty fun if you have the right teacher/materials to help you. Otherwise, it’s confusing as hell. But what subject isn’t like that?

Chemistry was fun, for a while, at least. After 2 years of doing similar problems over and over and over and over and over again, you kind of start to get irritated by the repetition. I agree with some of the other posters. Physics can do so much more than chemistry and chemistry was in many ways derived from physics, and even though my physics SAT wasn’t as high as my chemistry SAT, I loved it soooo much more. It’s entirely possible to explain chemistry through physics, but nearly impossible vice versa.
