Ive heard NYU is really stingy. So who's considering or decided not to go for financial reasons?

I’m not going because of financial reasons. I have other choices though and will be sending in the letter saying I won’t attend tomorrow so that a spot could open up on the waiting list… 152K in loans for 4 years? No thank you NYU!

I’m in the same boat. I’m in an immensely difficult position right now having to decide whether the education and experience is worth the 150,000+ debt I’ll be in.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle it. Ugh…
But I REALLY don’t want to go to a UC. I know I won’t be very happy there…

Haha NYU wants me to take a $112,000 loan. How ridiculous!

But a NYU degree = high paycheck (obviously depends on major though, lol).
I am getting about 115k in debt, but I’m doing it. I dont have any other options besides in-state public schools…

I will most likely pass up Film at Tisch for Film at USC. I have a pretty significant merit scholarship at USC and NYU gave me nothing… So, I can’t really justify an additional $17,000 a year to go to NYU.

NYU wants my son to borrow $192,000 over four years! I consider the “scholarship” they gave him an insult. It’s his first choice, however. Although he’s a smart kid, convincing him how ridiculous it is to take on this much debt is not easy, but I feel it’s safe to say he will not be attending NYU.

I wouldn’t take it as an insult. It’s well known that NYU has terrible financial aid. Hardly anyone gets a good package; it sucks, but there you go.

You’re right, it sucks. And we did know how lousy their financial aid was when he applied. I guess we were hoping he’d get lucky.

Count my daughter in on your list. You should have SEEN her face.

First, she opened the packet and screamed “ohmygosh!” She was SO excited…looked like the entire cost was “met”. Then I watched her face fall as she saw it was over $200,000 in loans. Hahahahahahahahaha! NYU…YOU IS FUNNY.

@R12468 - How did it come out to over $200k? I attend CAS and while it’s expensive ([Tuition](Tuition)) I didn’t think it was over $200k for 4 years!

Those of you turning down serious debt are making smart decisions. My blunt opinion is anyone taking out over $50k or so in loans for undergrad is an idiot. No, you are not guaranteed a good job with an NYU degree - you are not guaranteed a job at all. Harvard grads don’t make much more on average than State U grads, let alone the average NYU grad. A BA in a liberal arts field + tons of debt isn’t exactly lucrative.

I’ll graduate in 2012 with 0 debt. Total costs for 4 years = $76k, not bad. My friends graduating with $100k or so in debt feel like morons right now. Low-cost housing, no meal plan, and 2 scholarships saved my ass. Otherwise it would’ve been SUNY all the way.

How much is tuition at one of the CUNYs relative to that of NYU?
I’ve looked online but it seems really vague since they don’t really offer on-campus housing.

CUNY is like 5k for in state and 12k for out of state
Hunter and Baruch are the top ones but City is great too. Last year with fin aid Cuny was going to give $400 a semester(they will cover full need with out loans) but I turned it down for a year off to work and build my portfolio. If i do not get into NYU I might go to a Cuny

Baruch has great business program and Hunter has a great Liberal Arts Program(w/ good Film,Drama, and Dancing majors)

Also alot of ppl go to Cuny for a year or two then transfer out to Top private colleges
Hunter, city, and Baruch has housing and al of the CUNy will help u find places to live for cheap

I know this may sound absurd, but is it too late to apply to the CUNYs?
(Thank you, btw)

CUNYs are rolling there is still time and the application is simple one app to 4 or 5 cunys and u get itno your top two i think that how it’s works. You can apply on line now then send ur transcript asap! Just go for it and good luck!

Thank you much again!!
Let’s hope this works out…

So it’ll be cheaper than NYU?

Alix…because the COA is about $56,000-$59,000 per year ($224000-$236000 total). And, there is a long story I don’t want to go into here about health issues, businesses making and losing money, taxes, etc…but they think we can afford all of it, but we can’t (FAFSA just doesn’t tell much of a “non average” person’s story) so they offered no aid. Yet I actually make less than the cost. So…it’s just not do-able (of course).

I’ll add another person at my daughter’s school is also not attending due to money. Of course. This list goes on and on.

My daughter got accepted into Tisch for Film, her dream school since she was 10, but at a staggering cost of $60,000 a year. NYU offered a total of $4,000 a year in scholarship. Needless to say, I will not burden myself and/or my daughter with $224,000 in loans.
I just got off the phone with the financial aid department and asked if there was anything else that could be done. Could they at least match a competing schools aid amount. Not beat it, just match it. I was snottily told, “NYU doesn’t “match” other schools.” I was also told “you can appeal but the highest appeal amounts are $1,000 a year.”
Thanks for nothing NYU.

How much would it cost to go to CUNY?
Collegeboard says 12000 or so, but that doesn’t include room/board (because that school doesn’t offer it…?)
