So Who's NOT going to NYU for Financial Reasons????

uskoolfish, everything you say is correct. It happens every year that people do not do their homework and are surprised and disappointed with NYU’s financial aid, or lack of same. My D applied in 2002, graduated in 2007, and little has changed in the past decade. NYU makes it crystal clear that they do not meet full need. This isn’t a secret to anyone who does a minimum amount of research. Applicants and their families need to go into this process with a realistic view as to the possible outcome.

call me crazy, or naive, but if nyu is your “dream school” then you should be willing to put forth the effort to make it a reality. there are thousands of scholarships and grants available which are completely seperate from nyu. there are ways to get in to the honors program after your freshman year -and achieve scholarships which can significantly reduce the cost of all four years. not being able to realize your dream as a result of money is not a reasonable excuse - take it year by year and see what options are available to you.

but then again, i’m willing to go $100k in debt for my dream schoo.

^But it’s really hard to find scholarships. Almost all the local scholarships require essays :frowning: and I’m not good at writing essays at all :frowning: NYU…too expensive for me :/

"but then again, i’m willing to go $100k in debt for my dream schoo. "

Agreed. I’m on the waitlist, and as terrible as this might sound, I really hope
alot of people arn’t able to go to NYU this year who got admitted.

My younger D wanted badly to go to NYU, but their financial aid made it impossible.

bahaha. win on my mispelling of “school”

i’m not saying it won’t be hard. but then again, no financial aid formula is perfect. it’s not as though nyu has the ability to judge every individual’s personal circumstances over a ten year period in order to determine how much each family can pay. no college has those resoures. and while it’s unfortunate to draw a short stick (and trust me, i’m there with you) you have to weigh what you want out of college vs what you’re wiling to pay. if it’s worth it to you then go for it - there are so many different ways to make it possible.

I’m also not attending for financial reasons. ): I was so excited when I my acceptance letter, and immediately crushed when I saw the financial aid award. $12,000 scholarship, and $40,000 in loans. Impossible. Plus UCLA and Sarah Lawrence offered me huge amounts of gift aid.

Does NYU have an ROTC program? Cause if they do then i might highly consider applying there!

When NYU sent me that huge envelope, I looked at the Financial Aid paper and saw that my FA package totaled $56,000! I was SO excited because I thought I had a free ride.

I was wrong.

After some scrutiny, I saw that over $25,000 of the $56,000 is in loans. That’s $100,000 for the four years! For undergrad, I don’t think it’s worth it. I’m going to an NYU thing tomorrow, but if they don’t completely floor me, I doubt I’m going.

NYU should stop expanding for awhile and give better aid packages! >:[

cloudy, what have you decided now?

Well NYU didn’t AMAZE me, but I do like it there A LOT. I’m still seriously considering it as a possibility. If I go I suppose I could find a way to make it work.

I’m probably not going…:frowning: My parents have a PLUS loan of $16006 per year, and I have $5500 loan per year. That’s BAD.

Wait!!! I just realized this! http://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/resLifeHousServ/documents/2009_2010Urates.pdf

I’m going to dorm. Rubin only costs approximately $6600 PER year!? :open_mouth: wait so if I choose this dorm my parents only need $6600 PLUS loan PER year? O_o I’m confused!

I saw that too! But I don’t think you can guarantee that you get that dorm. However, you can indicate that you’d like low cost dorming. If you indicate this when applying for housing, you’ll get one of the lower cost dorms, just not definitely the Rubin room for $6,600.

You can only dorm in Rubin for Freshman year. after that, Cheap housing is $10500

I got $18.5k scholarship + $4k work study. My parents got a PLUS loan of $28k and I got $5.5k stafford loans… Is it even worth to get into that much debt personally? And my parents say that they would pay off the loans but they make less than $90k a year and an EFC of $17k.

It’s so lame that I have to take out so many loans and be in such debt. I also got an offer from another school thats offering me 38k in scholarships. I don’t know what to do! NYU is such a good school but I doubt I can realistically afford it

Add us to the list of people not going solely due to financial reasons. We got $8,000 in Tisch scholarships, which leaves $52,000 to pay out of pocket or borrow. NYU would be the choice if the price were lower, but in our judgement it’s just not worth the extra money. We knew what to expect and are not surprised at the outcome. We figure it was worth a shot. Best of luck to all who get to attend this wonderful school!

we? aren’t you a mom?

the financial package they gave me stated, “Dear Omar, please pull 240 Grand out of your ass. We’re not giving you ANY money! Sincerely, NYU”

I feel as if they admit us twice: 1st time through admissions when the requirements are standard. Then their FA office looks at who worth the $$ so only some of us get good packages. So there are really two steps, unless you are super welthy then the 2nd step won’t count.

LOL!
