I’ve noticed that there haven’t been many threads for fly-in programs this year. I’m kinda new to this whole fly-in thing and the deadline for Rice is quickly approaching so is anyone else applying to SOAR? How many other fly-ins are you guys applying to?
@aatd2 I haven’t started my essay yet. I will probably aim for it to be about 200 words. I noticed that other fly-ins have a word limit of 300 so I don’t think Rice is expecting a long essay.
While I definitely need a good amount aid, and visiting again this fall would be a bit of a financial stretch, I’m not low-income or a first generation college student. I’d feel bad about taking a spot from somebody who needed it more than I did.
That said, I’ve visited before and never needed a fee waiver, so they probably wouldn’t accept me for SOAR anyway. :-?
I applied a couple of weeks ago. My essay wasn’t that long (maybe 150 words?). @awesomepolyglot the whole point of SOAR is to get people who want to visit to Rice. You should apply, even if you don’t think you’ll get accepted. You never know what could happen!
WOW, I didn’t realize that it was due tomorrow. Time to scramble for a transcript At least I know that I could comfortably write a looooooong essay with no problem–everything interests me about Rice!
Hi, I just learned about this program and Rice is one of the colleges I really would like to go so I went to their website to check things out. When I got on the website it said that the due date was August 6th, so I realized I was a day late (it was the 7th when I was checking the website). I was pretty bummed, but I clicked continue anyway just to see, and apparently the application was still open, so I went ahead and filled it in. I’m not even sure if they’ll even look at it, because it was technically late, but I did get an automated response telling me they received it. Since the whole thing was written in about half an hour I doubt that I will get in with my lousy answer, but I just wanted to know if anybody else submitted it after August 6th.
My son drug around and didn’t get it done on time, but went ahead and submitted it yesterday, not sure what the result will be but it was worth a try anyway.
Last year the SOAR decisions came out on August 25 which was a Friday. If Rice holds true to form I agree with @awesomepolyglot that it should be this Friday or perhaps early next week.
Houston1021 predicted it correctly. My daughter received a notice by email today that she was accepted to SOAR. She is very excited. I joined CC just now and made my first post to let everyone know that some decision emails have come out. Thank you Houston1021 for all of the helpful information you share about Rice!
Congratulations to @Outlander. Glad to hear your daughter was invited to SOAR. Last year it was a very hard invitation to get with many more applications (almost 1700) than spaces (150). I imagine that will be true this year also.
