I just put down my CSULB enrollment deposit today (Mechanical Engineering). Due to a family trip right after my high school graduation, I didn't sign up for the first available date for student orientation/class registration (SOAR). I went with Friday 6/21. Now I'm wondering if I should try to change it to earlier that week (and change the family trip). Does a few days make a difference in getting classes?

I also went with the 21st and im pretty sure it said the date you signed up for was final.

few days wont make a difference. I mean most of us here are already registering now anyways. I register for classes thursday. You as an ME (as am i, 4th year) will only take a couple ME courses your first semester. the rest will just be GE’s so you will still have a wide variety to pick from. In all honesty you will more than likely be taking MAE 101, and 172 and the rest are GE’s. MAYBE MAE 205 but wait to do that until the semester before 305 since its all MATLAB and you dont want to forget that stuff.

@Elite, I’m probably transferring to long beach for EE in fall but I’m still waiting on cpp so I haven’t submitted my ECD yet. If I wait till the Aug 5th deadline will I be SOL and miss all of the classes? Should I just submit my ECD, go see a csulb counselor and register for classes first? I don’t even know what classes I need to add haha… D:

Thats a tough answer. Personally I would put in my ECD now and sign up for a soar date, and the worst that happens with that is you get accepted to Pomona and you forfeit the money you paid for your soar date, and just go to pomona instead. and to be honest, with your EE classes you probably would be SOL if you waited until the august 5th date. Not sure if they will still save spots for transfers at that point but your semester would probably be upper division capstone classes. Which may be a good thing to just get them out of the way.

Ah, alright thanks. I think I might just wait until may 1st (which is CPP’s ECD deadline this year for some reason), if nothing happens then I’ll submit the csulb ECD and schedule a soar date then.

I seen a post on here regarding SOAR and certain courses being set aside for transfer students. If one of my major specific core courses shows up as full right now is there still a chance I will be able to get a seat in that class when we’re enrolled during the SOAR workshop? There are 3 core courses for my major and all were Tues/Thurs back to back, which would’ve been awesome! Now two are still open but the last class the one which seem most interesting is now full So is there still a possibility that I could get in?

Also I was checking my MyCSULB today and noticed this,
http://i.imgur.com/GU0aNIX.png
, are we limited to 14 units at first and then can sign up for 18 after a certain date?

How exactly do we know what classes we need to take for our major?

Is there a sheet like assist.org had for lower division classes? Very lost on how to obtain my BS for Aerospace Engineering.

You could check this out for a start:

[CSULB 2013-14 Catalog - Roadmaps - Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering - Four Year Plan](http://www.csulb.edu/divisions/aa/catalog/current/roadmaps/coe/mae/maebs02-4yr.html)

csulb1234, if you have any questions about that roadmap let me know. I transfered last fall for ME, so i pretty much took the exact courses youll need for the next year. Mechanical and aero split after your first transfer year, so i cant help you much further than that.

also a list of the courses to take.

Elite toast, yes please, anything and everything you know would help me out! What classes to take, what websites helped you out, anything :)

It was so easy to go to assist.org and learn what lower division classes i needed, but this upper division is a bit more confusing.

So pretty much what i have shown here is a good flowchart for getting your degree. For the flowchart, all solid lines mean that class leading is a prerequisite, and i THINK dotted lines mean they are concurrent(im not positive what the dotted lines are). You will get to know Teagle, he is our faculty adviser and general badass(take him for MAE 371(dynamics)). here is what he told me during my first advising appointment with him; the most important classes to take care of are the ones that lead to your senior design project, these classes are: 371, 272, and 373; 371 leads to 375 and then you take 471 and 472which is the first and second semesters of your senior design project respectively. Now im not sure where you are coming in from (in terms of classes you already have taken but i could walk you through my first year to give you an idea.

in community college i got through calc 1-3, physics(mechanics and then electricity&magnetism), materials of engineering, an intro to engineering course, and a solid modeling course(solidworks).

My first semester at Long beach here was my schedule:
MAE 205-MATLAB
MAE 300-instrumentation and measurement
CE 205-statics
MATH 370A-differential equations
HSCI 471 -(i think this was the title, it was human sexuality an upper division capstone)

Spring:
MAE 371- dynamics
MAE 272- intro to manufacturing
MAE 330- thermodynamics
MAE 373-mechanics of deformable bodies
MAE 305-numerical methods

what is important to note is that i got MAE 172, engineering materials, and the engr 101 classes waived because i took an equivalent class at community college which teagle waived for me. If you have ANY classes that might be equivalent, bring it up, because more than likely you can get it wavied.

so i hope this gives you a good idea of your first year here, more than likely your schedule will look very similar.

I’m an incoming transfer student - so will we register for classes during our SOAR? MyCSULB says “You may begin enrolling for the Fall 2013 Regular Academic Session session on June 1, 2013.” My SOAR is on July 15, so it seems kind of late after my registration is available?

Also, how is parking during SOAR?

Interesting stuff about the ME and Aero classes at the upper division level. As an FTF in ME I wanted to start looking at courses before I go to SOAR particularly to try to figure out a commuting-friendly schedule (it’d be great if I could work out one weekday when I don’t have to drive to campus). I’ve looked at the ME roadmap which pretty much lays out the engineering-related stuff to take (just got my MDPT results back, and am glad I’ll be able to go directly into Calc I). But I could use some help trying to figure out what GE to take, and also anything on teachers to look for or avoid. Any good places to find out about that?

For looking up professors
[California State University Long Beach - California](http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/SelectTeacher.jsp?sid=162)

Not sure how well that site applies to CSULB, but when I attended CC it was quite helpful.

Thanks for the link. I used to look at ratemyteachers.com every fall when I got my high school class assignments – the info was a little hit and miss, but helpful in some cases. Will check out the college version when I start researching classes.

Elite, thanks a ton! Already making sense. That last picture flow chart is great.

Question about that flow chart. Do I need to finish every class on that chart? (Im most likely switching over to mechanical engineering if they allow me to)

Also, I have taken Calc1-3, Physics mechanics and electricity/mag, chem1, and thats it, no engineering courses at all.

@op9no2: parking is not problem at soar, and you cannot register until they take the hold for soar off when you attend

@csulb12345: yes, everything on that chart needs to be completed. Judging from what you said you have done, assuming you have completed all lower division ge, you should be shaking our next university presidents hand in three years.

as far as the classes you already have done, thats actually a great place to start. i would suggest to make sure you get Math 370A (differential equations) and CE 205 (statics) done your first semester. i think those are some of the bigger gateway classes for ME transfers in the beginning. that way you can get through to dynamics and deformable bodies which are also main gateway classes. everything else will fall into place. you will need to take materials, solid modeling, matlab, and manufacturing which are also main first year transfer classes. also if you have any equivalent classes which did not officially transfer but feel are essentially the same, talk to Teagle and he will straighten it out for you.
