Social Life at Davidson

How is the social life at davidson, are there a lot of parties, do people go out, is it fun... or are much people concerned only with studying and hardly ever party... also how are the girls there, is there a fair amount of good looking ones?

one more thing how large a role does religion play on campus, and are most students highly religious or more passive?

thanks soooo much any info will be greatly appreciated

We study really hard here. The work is truly never-ending, and that's all you ever hear about Davidson, but it's true. There is always something to be done.
BUT! There are plenty of parties, for sure! The guy-floor below me plays beer pong almost daily (which is not really wise, but they enjoy themselves) and after First Night Down (first night freshmen are allowed in the Court down the hill where all the Eating Houses and frats are located) there are parties almost every day. Spring Frolics in the spring is a weekend of absolute insanity: party, party, party, and the teachers expect you to come to class hungover.
We work hard and party hard; run on caffeine and rest on alcohol!

There are also lots of things to do if you're not into drinking (I'm not at all -- Diet Coke trumps beer, any day!). The Union hosts fun socials -- dances, juggling lessons, cookie-decorating contests, midnight pancake breakfasts, and Davidson brings in a lot of big artists to entertain the students. One year, we had O.A.R., Black Eyed Peas, and the Fray, to name a few. Students are very involved in sports and clubs.

Residence Life Office actively encourages freshmen hall bonding with hall games, hall service project opportunities, and inter-hall competitions like the Freshmen Olympics.

Davidson's administration realizes that a small town can make for a "bubble" sensation or a cramped atmosphere, so they don't squabble for an instant over pumping funds into fun things for the students.

Most of the people here are very attractive and concerned with how they look (not in a self-conscious way -- basically, people just dress up a bit instead of dressing sloppily). But you get all kinds.
In terms of dating/relationships, I get the impression there are lots of couples and lots of flings ... not a lot in between. People aren't cliquey, per se, but they find their niche and usually stay put, on their own accord.

Religion and spiritual life are what you make of them. They have churches of all denominations, Jewish hillel & synagogue and other organizations, among many other clubs, religious groups, and associations.
Yes, Davidson is still Presbyterian "officially," but no, there's no mandatory service on Sunday mornings or anything remotely like that.

thank you so much for the information I am going on an official visit for baseball there in a couple weeks, I am really excited and looking forward to seeing the school

Sure thing! If you have any other questions before your visit, I plan on checking this at least once a week. If you have any questions following your visit or when you're here, also happy to help!

Hey guys - I thought i'd post in here because my question deals with the Davidson social life, too.
first of all - would you say davidson is strict or not in terms of underage drinking? also - is there a sizable population of the student body that could be generalized as 'the frat guys'?

i've heard a good bit about davidson, and like every school, there are some stereotypes about the students. for davidson, this seems to be that the 'normal davidson student' is a white, southern, well-off semi-conservative, who does well in school but likes to party.

how accurate would you say this is? (speaking generally, of course. when i visited, my tour guide was an artistic liberal from california. but is this (the sterotype above) the norm?)

also, for the means of trying to better see how well I would fit in with the davidson population, which of these characteristics would you say 'generally' apply to the davidson student body:

very intellectually curious? arrogant/haughty? active in class? quiet? nerdy? always open to new people? generally stick with their own group? tolerant? politically apathetic/ active? studious? does just enough to get by? laid back? always busy?

Amp, or anyone who answers some of my questions, thanks a mil. I'm trying to make a decision on whether I should apply to Davidson ED or not.

Davidson College is not strict at all. Prior to First Night Down (see above) ... which actually happens to be tomorrow (yay!) the coppers from the town of Davidson do kind of crack down, but generally they respect the quasi-jurisdiction of the campus police.
Davidson does emphasize that the legal drinking age is 21; like all of the other colleges across the country, they also require you to take an online course about alcoholism. But the cops are really nice. If they see you with a solo cup, they will "assume" that you're holding water or soda unless you give them a reason to believe otherwise (ie. you're being too loud / goofing off / apparently drunk). At the very most, they might come over to you and say, "Pour it out." And if you want, at that point, you can pour it out and they walk away and you go get more.
If you're caught, don't lie (honor violation is way worse than alcohol citation) and they'll just start out giving you warnings.

As far as I can tell, there are very few who are distinctively "frat guys." There are seven or eight fraternities on campus, all of them very different from each other, and lots of guys are in them, but there are no stereotypical jocks, here: gotta pass admission standards before they consider you for sports, organizations, etc.

The prep stereotype exists for a reason. But don't forget, over 85% of the student body comes from outside of the Carolinas.
My hallmates are from: Florida, Ghana, Wisconsin, Texas, South Carolina, Washington DC, Turkey, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, California, Virginia, and New York ... so, yes, lots of Southern states, but still, a bit of everything. People say "ya'll" here. Fried food is an option almost daily, if you want it. Yes, it's a Southern school. But you still get a bit of everything.
(I'm a raving mad liberal, by the way -- and I would say most kids here actually are moderate to liberal)

Very intellectually curious - about 80%
Arrogant/haughty - about 5% (this is actually my favorite part about the students here)
Active in class - about 50%
Quiet - about 50%
Nerdy - about 20%
Always open to new people - about 90%
Generally stick with their own group - 50% (people find their niche and stay there, but they're still open to new people)
Tolerant - about 90%
Politically apathetic - about 10%; active - about 90%
Studious - 95%
Just enough to get by - 5-10%
Laid back - 95%
Always busy - 95%

Hope this helps!

It does! Thanks a bunch for posting here :)
