Social Life

How is the social life at Davidson? I won't say my personal preference since I don't want your answers to be based towards me (even though I doubt anyone would do that :P)

Just some questions:

-- If I were to walk around campus during a regular school day, would I see people playing sports on any quads?
-- Party scene?
-- What is the typical night like at Davidson?
-- Is Davidson an overall social environment?

I've heard many mixed things about Davidson... inform me!

well i am probably not the absolute best source for this response but i will tell you what i can.... There is definitely a sports culture at Davidson. Not only do they have great D1 sports programs, but also have a large following for their club and intramural sports. Therefore there are always people playing sports on the lawns. During my last visit there were people playing frisbee, cricket (a little strange i know) and kicking a soccer ball around in front of chambers (the main academic building) in the 80 degree heat. It was february (another great thing about davidson is the weather :) ). That being said there is also a lot to do if sports isnt really your thing. On this same visit there was a lit. class outside reading some book, a dance ensemble practicing, and a few art students painting so its a pretty diverse atmosphere. Ok, party scene is very fun :) The frats and eating houses always have something going on and the themed parties are great. Both are self selection and the parties are open to everyone. Typical night during the week is spent studying for most though wed. fri. and sat. a lot of people go out. This "typical night" really depends on what you get involved in. You could be spending it in CA playing in a sports game or white water rafting in central NC, it really depends. Davidson is definitely a social environment! Most are very serious about academics but can have fun too! Everyone always seems really happy and friendly to each other too! Hope this helps.

I'm going to Vanderbilt but Davidson is awesome, I just want to hop in here and help you out.

Davidson, I think, owns a good part of Lake Norman (practically next to campus), which is one of the better lakes in not just the Carolinas, but the Southeast. There are good NC trout streams nearby for fly fishing, and it's not that far from the mountains or the ocean. Basically, anything outdoors (can either be social or alone) is footsteps away at Davidson. It's a cool place to be.

Davidson is a very social place, and I would say the "typical" weekend night on campus is different from person to person, night to night.

One person might go to dinner with friends, then hang around the rooms to get ready and start drinking, then go down to the senior apartments to parties, and go from there to the frat and eating house parties. They might finish the night at the Outpost restaurant or by taking the Vamanos van to Cookout.

Another person might go to a show at the student union, then paint pottery at a union board sponsored event, and finish with free midnight chic-fil-a and karioke.

Another person might hang around the hall, watching movies, playing video games, and talking with friends. Yet another person might go on a Davidson Outdoors trip, leaving Friday to go camping and kayaking for two nights, returning Sunday afternoon. Yet another person might even work on a paper and catch up on sleep.

The best part, the part that makes Davidson special, is that these people and events aren't mutually exclusive. You'll see just as many 'party people' or drinkers at the union board events as you will people who don't want to party. People go back and forth between events, and are friends with people with many different interests.

A typical weekday night is usually pretty different, consisting of homework, working out, club and volunteer activities, and relaxing. However, there are still many people who treat their weekdays similar to weekends, and people can find all sorts of fun activities to procrastinate work!

Hope this helps! You should visit Davidson and see for yourself!
