Social Life at OSU

OSU is my D’s first choice. If accepted, she’ll be an OOS from NY.
She’s pretty social and is wondering what the social life is like on campus.
What can you tell us?

Thanks!

I'm not a student at OSU but a senior in HS living in Columbus. The social life at OSU is VERY lively. As much as people who have lived in c-bus all their lives (like me) would like to tell you that there's nothing to do here, there is alot. And there is always, ALWAYS somthing going on on campus on thurs-sat nights.

There are 800 campus student groups -- there's got to be something to do! :-)

The social life is excellent, although certain aspects do revolve around beer and football. There is always something to do, organized and not.

I didn't want to mention it before, b/c I feel like I'm biased, living in c-bus and whatnot, but I agree with ambiguity about the beer and football. The social scene at OSU definitely revolves to some extent around drinking and sports. EX: Tonight is the annual jump into Mirror Lake, when students jump into the ice-cold lake to celebrate Beat Michigan Week. And it takes alot of liquid courage to jump into a lake when it's 30 degrees out. I'm just sayin...

Huge social scene. I disagree somewhat about the "beer and football" comments. While that's a big focus for a lot of students, you need to remember that there are over 30 thousand undergrands. Plenty of people who aren't into football and drinking have social lives. Scrabble club on friday nights attracts a lot of people, for example. I don't think it's an issue.

i disagree with people that say there is nothing to do here.

polaris and easton are two huge malls / shopping / restaurant areas in the suburbs. football and basketball buckeyes, the blue jackets, 4 arenas for concerts, the short north, the arena district, the brewery district, campus parties, high street down on campus has a lot of restaurants and sports bars.

there isnt a beach (unless you consider the alum creek beach.. a beach), we dont have major pro sport teams (we have the buckeyes....).

I'm obviously bias and I have little to no basis of comparison (i havent lived anywhere else) but Columbus is a great and, in my mind, underrated city...and because OSU is sooo big basically anyone can find a group with similar interests.

By the way, I'm a current OSU student - feel free to PM me with any specific questions.

^ Ditto to kelseyg's last comment

Look, it's THE Ohio State University. 50,000 grad and undergrads milling about. There's ALWAYS something amazing to do!

I should be honest and say the party+football+drinking scene is pretty vibrant. But I only know that from roommate experience; I personally have never had any alcohol, and I still am never bored.

I'm involved with a a bunch of cool clubs, everything from Theme Park Engineering Group to Swing Dance Club. There are over 800, so finding something you love is easy. And there are the cool people you meet around OSU and in your dorm who you can always randomly hang out with. There's High Street, full of businesses and cool things to do. The religious scene is also vibrant on campus for those who seek it out, which I personally love.

If that ain't enough, outside of OSU there's ExploreColumbus!
Explore Columbus : Home

The social scene at OSU is one of the biggest pluses for the school. Every kind of person is here, and it's easy to find your niche and your group of friends.

Thank you all!
Your comments are great!
Now we just need to hear from OSU . . .

as another senior that has lived in C-Bus all of my life, there is definetly a social scene....

not going to lie, columbus practically shuts down on saturdays when there is a home football game. Whichever college I choose to attend (hopefully UNC-CH ;), it will have to have a large sports following, simply because I cant imagine going through college without it after growing up around OSU...

beyond that, theres mcfaddens on high street which is 18+ on weds(HUGEE crowds during summer and when class is in session), sloopys (dunno when they are 18+) and TONS of 21+ clubs downtown and on high street.... as someone else said, theres easton (which kicks polaris' ass (coming from someone who has walked to the mall from my house))....oh, and if u know someone with a car, theres zoombezi bay which is probably closed by the time OSU starts, but they will be open for some of the spring...

I'm a current freshman so feel free to PM me with any specifics...but honestly...

Ohio State is absolutely amazing all around.

The best way to describe it is this: What you look for, you'll find - because everything is here. If she wants small movie getogethers with friends in the dorm, that will definitely be there. If she wants to "go out" to house parties, someone on her floor will for sure let her tag along. The clubs are endless, but it is clear which ones are best and most influential.

If she's involved and motivated, she'll be happy here.

Great news!
She's in!!!

We think OSU is a great fit for her!! I absolutely LOVE how OSU called her to personnaly inform her she was accepted!!

She'll be in the business program. Do you think living on south campus is okay? Any dorm recommendations?

Congrats, editor! South campus is definitely a fine choice, it's a typical dorm set-up you'd find anywhere. It has a reputation as the most social side of campus.

I'm not sure about dorm recommendations. If she's honors, Bradley is a nice choice. It and Siebert are connected to a dining hall, which must be wonderful in the winter.

Thanks Kelsey!

Any info that you think she needs to know is quite welcome.

I second Bradley.

I have a friend living there and it is, in my opinion, one of the nicest freshman dorms available -- especially with the brilliant bathroom setup and close proximity to Kennedy Commons.

If she wants to live on North (which is great in the small scholars learning communities) but is in Honors, go for Taylor Tower.
