What is the social life like during the cold winter months? What do the kids do during week nights and weekends for fun?

Also, is there snowboarding nearby? Is the mountain big or small?

My son is currently a freshman at Rochester. He's doing very well and having a good time. That's all that I ask. As far as things to do besides schoolwork, there are the usual campus activities including a really nice student union and of course the University of Rochester is close to the City of Rochester where students go by shuttle bus to visit the associated Eastman School of Music and its theater, dine at restaurants etc. As far as the winter is concerned, I hear more concern from parents than from students attending the school. Walkways are kept clear of snow, there are heating pipes under some walkways and there are underground tunnels connecting a number of buildings.

We live in the Rochester area -- Bristol and Swain are where most people ski/snowboard.

how far is Bristol Mountain from UR?

And do the students in the ski club (the more relaxed one, not the racing one) buy season passes themselves, or through the group for a disounted price?

how cold is it generally. like when look at the seasons.;;

ex: spring - pretty cold 32
summer -
fall -
winter- really cold. 23
this is just an example, anyone know?

My family lived in Rochester for twenty some years before moving down to Maryland and now both my sons will be in Rochester. Here's what I remember of Rochester weather.

Summer is beautiful - warm, not too humid. There are usually 10 or so days of high temp. (90s) and high humidity. There may be 3 or so such days and then the weather would break. However, I used to expect a chilly weekend by the end of August with night temp. going down to 50s.

Fall - gorgeous. Great leaves. Crisp. Loved the Indian summer spells. However, snow can come as early as October (not that much but you can see it).

Winter - Not as cold and not as much snow as you might expect. Lake Ontario buffers the extremes. It is rare to be in the teens for any length of time. It's usually in the 20s. However, it is cloudy. Snow - about 70"-80" per season - less than Syracuse and Buffalo areas. They are used to it and have equipment to handle it. People are usually not concerned until forecasts go over 8 inches. Believe it or not, you do get used to it.

Spring - long time coming. We figure that it's usually a month late/later than you'd like. Gets a bit wet from melting snow. The first warm, sunny day can get Rochesterians giddy.
