The academics and atmosphere at Oberlin look amazing, but my only concern is the seemingly middle-of-nowhere location. What do Obies do for fun on the weekends?

My visit left me with the impression that quite a few go to Elyria (e.g. a multi-plex) or Cleveland at least periodically. The conservatory provides numerous options, and a lot of entertaining, talented students. Oberlin does have a few restaurants and bars, as well. I think quite a few students spend the weekend just relaxing or in the library.

Perhaps I current Obie can correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't seem to get too much of a party vibe; I visited on a Friday afternoon, and didn't exactly see people hauling around kegs... It seemed like one was there, but not as big as some other schools (cough Kenyon... visiting the next Saturday morning saw lots of red-eyed, noise sensitive people trying to find lost articles from the previous night)

I went to visit for a weekend and there were a plethora of things to choose from:

several house/dorm parties,
dance concert,
dance party,
poetry reading,
going out to eat,
wandering downtown,
more dance parties,
an AMAZING selection of bands playing,
hanging around the dorm making cookies.

i got the feeling that no Obie was pressured into doing something they didn't want to do. there was literally something for everyone, even people who just want to sit on those wonderful couches in the library! and, as you can see by me list, Obies really love music &dancing. i felt like that was a major vibe on the campus, which i loved

Why not ask one or more of the students on the Oberlin blogs?:

I'm an Oberlin student and what's been said above is pretty much on target. There are usually lots of activities going on; there are usually either a few parties or sort of the one "open" party of the weekend (we definitely don't have a big party culture), and being Oberlin, concerts of all types. Then there are other events, like maybe something in our disco, an open-mike, or a movie. Of course if none of these are interesting or inbetween events, there's the option of just hanging out with friends and doing something with them like going out to eat, playing a game, etc. Weekends tend to vary for me - some are so busy with fun things to do and other times there's not as much and things do get a little repetitive, so it would be nice to have some more options. I've actually never gone into Elyria and only rarely go to Cleveland, and I think that most students spend the weekend on campus. The good thing is that students are usually pretty creative about weekends since we have to make our own fun - the town has nothing to offer, but the downside is of course, that the town has nothing to offer.
