So far GA Tech is the best school I've gotten into. I was waitlisted at W&M, and Michigan hasn't even responded yet. At this point, if I based my decision solely on quality of education, I'd go to Tech, but I'm really worried about what I've heard about the social scene. I don't want necessarily a party school, but definitely not a boring one, as well as the male/female ratio seems a bit daunting. I am going to visit in a couple weeks to see what I think instead of reading what people say online.

What do you guys know about Tech, outside the classroom? I really want to be wrong in what I've understood about Tech, so I'm looking for some first-hand opinions of the school.

My guess is that you’re from VA - why else would someone have W&M on their college-list next to GT and Mich …? But I might be wrong, of course.

I think you do the right thing - GO THERE and talk to current students! See if you ‘get a vibe’ or not! That’s more important than anything else! If possible, stay over night in a dorm and get first-hand impressions.
Evidently, you applied to some very good schools, so quality of education is ‘given’ - then the ‘soft-issues’ become key!

My son is a freshman at GT (I’m from VA) and LOVES it! Definitely ‘school’ is not a piece of cake, but he has enough time to do sports, other hobbies and also his “social/emotional” life gets a fair share (despite the infamous ‘ratio’). I’d call his life anything but ‘boring’!

Are ALL of his colleagues as excited as he is (I met quite a few on several visits to Atlanta during the last 9 months)? Definitely not! Some are frustrated about their grades, some are overwhelmed by the amount of work, and some are simply unhappy - so far, I have met only 2 ‘frustrated’ ones (of about 15 in total).
My son’s impression is that many of those unhappy students don’t make enough efforts themselves to ‘reach out’. There are tons of clubs/activities offered at GT - but you need to inform yourself about them and possibly test a few until you found the one(s) that you like!

Again, go there and see for yourself!

I remember visiting numerous colleges with my son; interestingly, he dropped Carnegie Mellon from his list after an overnight-visit, he liked Rice and he fell in love with GT …
