So what's the social scene REALLY like freshman year at GWU? How strict is DC with enforcing underage drinking laws? What's the deal...?

The social scene freshman year revolves around going out to clubs, going to frat parties, or going to parties in other people’s rooms (a lot of the time, in Thurston). Unlike a lot of other cities, most clubs are 18 to enter, 21 to drink. Some clubs are stricter than others about underage drinking and fake IDs…again, it isn’t militant like in some cities I’ve heard about, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend trying to get a drink at a bar if you are underage- remember, you are in the district, so you will be committing a federal crime!

Also the dorm party scene is a bit different than at other schools because it is the job of University Police, not RAs, to write you up for drinking. This is good in one sense because a) you can actually trust your RA to help you out and give you honest advice without having to worry about getting “caught” doing something, and b) if you aren’t being completely wild and crazy and loud, no one is going to come knocking on your door trying to get you in trouble. However, it is bad in another sense in that if you do get written up, it can have serious consequences with Student Judicial Services.

My advice: Just be smart if you are going to party. Don’t try to blast music and fit 50 people in your Thurston room. Don’t try to use a horrible fake ID to get into a 21+ place. Don’t drunkenly stumble around streets. Use common sense!
