Social Science at Cal and UCLA

Why are social science department at Cal and UCLA so impacted; is it because they have really good departments and everyone wants in, or is it because a lot of students like that type of major, thus a lot people apply fore that major?

great question..i am curious as to why that is the case too. what are you applying for?

Sociology, how tough is it...

23% get in for cal. what are your stats?

I wasn't aware that all social science majors were that impacted. Last I checked, poli sci wasn't impacted at UCLA.

ucla took 500 for poli sci last year...

GPA: 3.9
EC's: not a whole lot, but some

I am so paranoid about getting in.

shamus,

UCLA/UCB: Match/Slight safety

Calm down. Did you do a TAP/honors?

Thats the thing, I’ve taken the easiest classes possible with no honors or TAP

You're still in great shape. Did you at least complete the IGETC/major prep?

how about me UCLA

applying for berkeley
3.8 gpa ...4/5 pre-reqs

igetc: complete after fall

and my school dose not have all the classes to fulfill all pre-reqs, so its not entirely complete.

I really want to go to Berkeley

Poli sci is marginally impacted as of last year. Nowhere near as bad as Comm or Bus Econ though.

As far as why they're impacted, it just depends. Comm at UCLA specifically is impacted because it was designed to be a relatively small department and, as such, doesn't have the capacity for everyone who wants in. Since it's also hugely popular due to it's application post-graduation and it's variety, there are significantly more people who want to be in the major than can be accomodated.

I'd say bus econ is impacted because it's as close as we get to business and lots of people want to do business.

As for the others, eh. These tend to be popular at all schools. They're not nearly as difficult to get into as Comm or Bus Econ because they can handle a lot of demand. Being classified as impacted for these majors just means that there's a lot of interest in them and they won't be able to handle all of the qualified students who want in. Opposed to say, Hebrew, which has room for all 2 of it's qualified students.

bearclaw,

What's your intended major?

shamus,

You're still a good match/slight safety to either UC. I wouldn't sweat it.

allie,

is English major considered marginally impacted then as well, since it has nearly the same admission rates w/ English at roughly 65% and Poli Sci at 61%?

poli sci major uclari...wanna double in mass comm

Yes, English is included in the slightly impacted range. Lots of interest, but also lots of space.

bearclaw,

I'd say you're a match/slight safety as well. Did you do a TAP/honors program, complete the IGETC, etc.?

bearclaw, im the same as you, poli sci wanting to double in mass comm.
i have all my prereq's and igetc completed, but because of screwing up my first semester in college i have a low gpa at the moment(3.3) but as long as i keep doing good this year like i have since then, and pull a 4.0 again i should get a 3.5 by the end of the year.
yet that still probably wont get me into cal :/

bobbak,

Cal- Slight slight reach
UCLA- Slight reach/match
