Social Sciences in Rice

I know that Rice is strong in engineering and natural sciences. How strong is their social science department? I am planning to major in politcal science/anthropology, so is Rice a good choice?

I thin the social science programs are really good (although I don't have much to compare them to). Something great about going to Rice for Poli Sci is the Baker Institute. They have great events, lectures, speakers, etc. You might consider joining the baker insitute student forum.

My advisor from orientation week is an anth major and loves it.

Here's the website for the baker institute, if you haven't already seen it:

and for the student forum:

does anyone know much about an economics degree from Rice? what is its reputation like nationally?

Well, what do you want to do with it? Rice has a strong reputation nationally no matter what your major is.

As I am an international student, maybe I should made my comment in an international perspective. Generally speaking, a lot of people in my country has never heard of Rice, or know that it is a top-notch school. I happened to know it because my high school teacher suggested me applying to Rice (because of social sciences :)) ) But then, thanks for the advices!

how do companies in the US look at a Rice economics major?

I was a recruiter for a major US company (investment bank) less than 5 years ago and we loved to hire Rice grads. I would say they are known as extremely intelligent people who aren't afraid to work hard and have some fun too.

One tip: you don't have to major in econ even to be an investment banker, but it doesn't hurt.
