do we have to get our own soft phones.. does the college provide them.. whats the deal?

Yes, you must bring your own soft phone to campus. Each person has their own line to plug in their phone. While each person is assigned their own phone number, however they are connections to the same phone .

for example

I may be assigned 608-555-1111
and you are assigned 608-555-1112

we cannot be on the phone at the same time.

we cannot be on the phone at the same time.. why?

The phones are one shared line, the equivalent to having extensions in your home.

all the rooms have this phones?

Nobody at my school ever plugs a phone into the land line.....cells phones are the preferred phone.

Yes, All rooms have this type of set up for land lines. so while you have your own phone number(and voice mail) you share the physical phone line with your roommate(s). Don't apnic it all ends up working out.

so at D people just use their cells or what? does cingular work fine?

It depends on you. As far as I know there is not a lot of cell phone usage on campus. If students are looking ot meet up, they usually send a blitz. If you are in your room, you usually just work it out since you have free phone service including long distance from your room phone. I know that D only uses phone when she is off -campus and needs to do something.
