I read on another thread in the penn forum that at dart cell phones don't work/have really bad reception...is this true? How do people instantly communicate then?

no, they work

From what I've heard from various students as well as my tour guide, cell phones work but they are somewhat of a social faux pas. Students instead blitz (e-mail) each other. Perfect for someone as addicted to the computer as we are - or at least I am.

Does anyone want to verify this?

yeah... I get crystal reception out here (Sprint) but I never use my phone unless I'm leaving the college for some reason... i.e., going out of town. Why use them, when you get free phone service + long distance from the school? Blitz is def. the way to go.

but you have to get to a computer to blitz, right? do kids just use their laptops??

when i visited, our cell phone worked only in some areas.

Well you're required to buy a laptop, and using blitz will very quickly become second-nature to you if you come here. My cell phone also works fine, but I find that I only use it to call home.

I was in Hanover last summer and my Verizon worked perfectly, even in neighboring areas.

Thanks for the info guys; but does anyone else find it interesting how cell phones are rarely used? I would assume being a college and all that people want to instantly phone one another, and everyone isn't ALWAYS on their laptop...or are they?

you're required to buy a laptop? does dartmouth require a specific kind like NYU does?

Im not sure they are required just highly reccommended.

is the campus completely wireless?

nevermind, found it on website. thanks

I'm too lazy to find a quote right now, but the Class of 2008 is the first class for whom buying a laptop is required.

XAn, hope you are glad to be back on campus. Happy New Year to you.

Daughter has a cell phone through Verizion, but only uses it to call home. She says that someone is always on the phone in their room (free long distance) while she lives in a quad, and everyone has their own phone number , it is only one phone line.

I remember that the students had a choice of a couple of Dells, a Mac I book, a Mack G4 powerbook (12 inch), A G4 Powerbook (15 inch) and the option of getting a superdrive. The price range was from $1400-2000 depending on what you were getting. You can also order a printer (I did not order one at the time, but did end up sending her an epson color printer)

Daughter wanted a G4 12 in powerbook (about $1600) and loves it (she had just gotten a dell Laptop before she came to school). She picked it up on move in day plugged it in and was ready to go in 5 minutes. It comes fully loaded with your wireless card, MS office, the blitz (e-mail ) is already set up. It is not heavy, she thinks it is cute, slips it into her bag and then she is off. As a parent I made the choice to purchase from Dartmouth because daughter is not tech savvy should any thing happen to her PC that she would be able to fix it, so for me it was well worth the money.

You can bring your own PC (her roommate brough her laptop from home) however you must make sure that you meet the spec for the campus (XP Professional , not home edition) . On campus there are authorized MAC and Dell service centers so if there is a problem with your PC it can be easily taken care of. If you purchase your computer through Dartmouth and there is a problem, they will take care of it. If you did not purchase your computer through Dartmouth and you have a problem, you will most likely have to take it off campus for servicing.
