Some final week tips and encouragement for the SAT!

In a mere 6 days, all of us taking the June SAT will pour into testing centers across the country to take a ridiculously long test that unfortunately is somewhat important in determining whether or not we get into your dream schools. This, of course, brings up a lot of anxiety, but I hope this post will encourage the people reading this (as well as be a quick guide for last minute studiers).

First of all as most of us know, the SAT is just one slice of the college admissions pie. Extra curriculars and GPA are typically the more dominant factors. But, the SAT does have its place.

To do well on the SAT is to be confident that you can do well. I have seen too many of my friends walk into the testing center apprehensive and discouraged despite countless hours of studying and receive scores lower than their goals. Walk into the testing center feeling like you are going to get 2400 and keep that attitude the entire time in spite of struggles on problems. The mind works best on positive thoughts, so keep calm and carry on. The SAT is just a game to be beat.

In critical reading, remember that the answers are always in the lines of the section indicated by the question. Don't get nervous if you don't see the answer at first. It is there and pick the answer that is most closely supported by those lines. Look here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1390501-critical-reading-analysis-right-wrong-answer-choices.html?highlight=critical+reading+an+analysis+of+right+and+wrong+answer+choices
In the final week, continue with your vocab lists (here are some: SAT Vocabulary flashcards | Quizlet, The Hit Parade- Complete Set SAT Princeton Review 2012 flashcards | Quizlet). You can almost always get 2 Q's wrong in the Reading section and still get an 800.

In writing, memorize the 16 errors tested here: Reading and Writing Tips for the SAT and ACT: Complete SAT Grammar Rules. And, make sure you know how to do well on the essay here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html. If you get a 12 on the Essay, you can get one writing Q wrong and still get an 800.

In math, remember to check each answer using a different method than the one you used to find the answer. For those who need concept help, see here: http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat-mathematics-review.pdf.

Keep doing those bb practice tests, but don't do too much on friday. It's like the day before CIF. Don't overload on practice!

Generally, You can get 3 answers wrong and still get a 2400 on the SAT (as long as their in CR and W), 8 answers wrong for a 2300, 13 answers wrong for a 2200, and about 18 answers wrong for a 2100! It's typically 5 questions for each 100 points. You can get a lot wrong and still get a great score. It's, again, about confidence.

Here are some success stories to boast morale: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1481004-tips-how-get-2400-a.html, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/336074-biggest-improvment-sat-stories.html, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1173822-my-fast-sat-prep-guide-how-i-went-2080-2340-10-days.html.
