Ok, so I already registered for classes during 1st orientation, as well as having signed up for a FIG. However, I want to change my classes around because the fig leaves me with the worst professors for the classes (ch 301 and m408c). I have to call tomorrow before I can do anything because of the fig, so I think I can take care of that. But has anybody done this before?

Si the most important point is, if the professor is not mentioned in the UT website, is it fair to say that the class will not be available? I'm curious because I found a class that makes my schedule very attractive. It's ARH 302 U# 20135. The class is open, but the professor does not appear. What do you recommend?

If a class is listed as open, it is open regardless if there is a professor listed. The lack of a designated professor means that the department, in this case Art History, has not slotted a professor yet for that section.

That being said, if you are concerned about having a “good” professor, then you will be gambling by taking that ARH class since you cannot research the prof.

It is my understanding that FIGS comprise the better professors at UT. I know in my DD’s FIG that is the case. Do you mind sharing the profs in M 408C and CH 301 that are listed in your FIG? You might be able to get some feedback here where they turn out not to be so bad.

I had Vandenbout for CH301 Radin for M408C
I wanted to get Treisman for M408C and Sutcliffe for CH301

I called today so that I could remove the FIG, but my advisor kept stressing that these were the best professors and that I would be working with engineers since it’s an engineering FIG. However, I researched on myedu and ratemyprofessors, with Sutcliffe and Treisman being highly regarded, as opposed to the other two profs. I know I’m going by hearsay, but I don’t think there’s any other way to go about researching profs from somewhere you’ve never been to.

Vandenbout actually has similar grade distributions to Sutcliffe. However, Treisman had better grade distributions than Radin. Unfortunately, if you are stuck with those classes unless of some good reason like taking the honors sequence of chemistry instead of the general one.

Yeah, I tried getting out so that I could have Treisman. Sutcliffe Is also a good prof, so he had to tag along haha (although I wanted Sparks or Laude). I just don’t want to have a projected GPA of 2.29 with my current classes…

I can’t speak for Radin, but Vandenbout was a fantastic teacher for CH301!! I had him last fall and he did a great job of teaching and was very accessible during office hours. If you are trying to switch professors for M408C i would recommend Davis. She had a good pace for the class, not too fast and not too slow. Plus her tests were really resonable.

I guess ill just stay in the FIG because my counselor wasn’t too keen on letting me get out of the FIG. I’ll just have to make UT work out and you say vandenbout is good, so that’s good too. I’ll just check if I can get a different VAPA because is rather take something more interesting than intro to philosophy. Time to go on myedu and plan it out!

MyEdu is very misleading at times, don’t always trust it

I’ve heard Radin is awesome, literally every person I’ve asked has recommended her

Ahh, then who to trust lol. I only know a few past high school friends that go to UT and I never asked them. Mostly because I never really talked to them haha. But I will just go ahead and keep both of my current profs and the rest of my schedule as it is.

Negative reviews are starting to creep back into Myedu; they’re just denoted as a recommendation. Sifting through them can still prove to be valuable as some professors aren’t listed on Ratemyprofessor.

I used myedu in conjunction with rmp. I think they generally backed each other up, which is why I wanted the new professors. I don’t understand why they took the bad reviews off of the website in the first place. Isn’t the point of the website to give a teacher review?
