Some strange questions regarding UCs

Hi everyone, I’m new here. I am a worried junior (class of 2006). I have some questions about admission to the UC system.

 1. Does your freshmen year GPA count? I understand that 9th grade is part of the cumulative GPA, but I also heard from somewhere that the UCs only look at your STATE GPA which is only 10th grade to 12th? Can someone verify this?

 2. I scored an 800 on SATII Mandarin, but I am 3/4 Chinese. So would it be better to put my 720 US HISTORY score instead of 800 Mandarin?

 3. I am 3/4 Chinese and 1/4 German. I heard that on the application they will ask you for your race, so am I allowed to put German instead of Asian? Would that increase my chances of getting in?

Any replies are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

1) depends on your curriculum and what classes you took 9th grade year.
2) choose the one with the higher percentage ranking
3) actually, you're allowed to do it. and yeah.. it would help your chances slightly

If you're in state , gpa includes 10th and 11th, i believe. 9th grade doesn't count, it only counts toward completing the course requirements (like 4 yr of English)

9th grade doesn't count

I'd go with the 800, because they add up your points.

No, it wouldn't improve your chances. The ethnic/racial info is for survey purposes, not for admissions decisions. If you don't want to put down your race, don't.

Thank you integral, teal, and sac!

Any more replies?

i completely agree with sac

You can't put down 'German' as your race on a college application. It's 'caucasian,' as far as I know. By all means, correct me if I'm wrong, but in your case it doesn't matter if you put down white or asian. I'm in the same boat :D

SAC is absolutely correct, as in Lilybloom. 'German' is not a race. If you grew up in Germany or any other foreign country, for that matter, you could write about the experience in your essay, which would likely be a plus factor, not bcos you were German, but just because you had different life experiences than most Cal HS applicants.
