Hi guys, I need some direction. I graduated HS in 2007 and went to RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) for engineering technology and I did very well but I hated Rochester.

I went to RIT for 4 quarters, and decided I had had enough. I came home and transferred to Hofstra University for business. I went to Hofstra for 3 semesters and again I did very well but I was extremely bored at home and I couldn't tolerate it anymore.

After 3 semesters at Hofstra I went back to RIT and that didn't work out too well. I became depressed and wound up in the hospital. At this point I was wondering if I should continue with college. I came home once again and got a job for a few months and then I went to a trade school for HVAC for 7 months. I did not finish trade school and ended up getting 2 jobs in HVAC as a helper.

After this I decided that I could not crawl around in attics anymore and went to Nassau Community College for IT after visiting a career counselor a few times. I liked IT but I could not stay focused and I hated going to class.

I found a great union job in commercial and industrial HVAC and I've been doing that for the last 3 months. Now we are in the busy season and I can't see myself doing this much longer. Needless to say I have 108k in student loans and I don't know what to do.

Somebody help me.

You might want to post in the parent forum… this is a problem adults might have more insight on. You haven’t really finished any educational path you started, and it sounds like you are losing interest in your job as well. I am not sure what you want anyone to tell you… you in way over your head on debt already and it sounds like you have a job that could help you pay it down. I would not recommend that you take out more loans and go back to school full time – based on your past performance you would quit again and just owe more.

The only thing I would say is that if you really liked IT and want to bring the discipline to it you would need to finish a degree, maybe look into night classes while you work your HVAC job during the day. It will likely take you a few years to finish a degree. But you aren’t going to get something for nothing – you will have to suck it up and attend class, and do well if you want a degree of any kind and the kind of job that goes with it.

To me it seems like you have some growing up to do. We all have times in school and work when we would rather skip the hard part or quit. But most people don’t, they stick to it. You need some practice at that.

Stay with the union job, and get every hour of golden time that you can get. It’ll take years but be responsible and payoff your student loans. After you are free then revaluate things.
