Someone in honors please answer ....

thank you!

We're trying to advise D. This is not a "chance me" thread. Question is this: how does the honors program work, especially related to scheduling classes? Do you get full priority registration, i.e. for all classes -- honors or not -- the entire schedule? If so, do you get it for 4 years? Can only honors kids take honors classes? I'm trying to compare honors programs at a couple of universities. She wants UF (pharmacy, eventually), but I'm not sure if it wouldn't be better to transfer in after 60 hours if it's difficult to get classes/times/profs wanted/needed.

Thank you so much!!!

National Merit Finalists get priority registration times and other than the 1st semester registration that is done at preview, you get your pick of classes. My brother is a senior and has never had a problem getting the classes, professors, and times he wants. I believe Honors students without the NM designation also register on one of the first days. 1st chance at the Honors classes goes to Honor students in their first 2 years, but you can continue to take them all 4 years if there are openings. You usually register for 1 Honors class a semester, but you can take more than that if they don't fill up on the first reserve day. I believe I read on here where other students can register for them if they are still available during Drop/Add, but I can't confirm that.

thank you, florida pearl. So, you're saying you only get priority reg for the actual honors class, which is only one per semester? And ... therefore, you have no priority reg on any of the other classes you are trying to get into? Hmmm... so NM designation is a good thing for reg. That's good to know. She has a chance at that, as she would have made commeded in 10th grade. Hopefully, she'll do better in 11th, as she is preparing this time. Anyone else?

You get priority registration for all classes if you are Nat. Merit - first day of registration. Honors classes are reserved the week prior to the start of registration. You can reserve one Honors class on the first day of that week and an additional class on the second day if classes you are interested in are still available.

I appreciate the help, FP. The situation is that we live very close to UCF, where my son is going. And in the honors program there you have priority registration all 4 years for all classes, not just honors. And the only ones allowed to take honors are those in the honors program. We're just trying to figure things out. It might make sense for her to do all her GEP's at UCF (through their honors program) and then apply to the UF pharmacy school after two years. We'd know that she wouldn't have any trouble getting classes that way. The question would be how much she might be "penalized" in competing with UF students for those pharamcy slots. Aaargh .... my brain hurts. <g></g>

UCF has an unbelievable scholarship package for National Merit Finalists - so that will be tempting. UF used to have a large scholarship for NM, but that changed this year. You also get priority registration at UF for all 4 years, and I think honors classes are just for honors students (I did read a comment on here that said other students could register if they weren't full - you probably should check with UF honors if that is a concern.) In most areas UF's rank, overall class strength and reputation are so much higher than UCF, I chose UF and passed on the $$$. I can't offer any info on transferring into the Pharmacy dept. - although I know UF prefers that core classes in Chemistry, Math, and major class requirement courses be taken at UF. Many community college transfers find themselves repeating courses.

FloridaPearl,

Thank you again. It's all good information to consider. Thankfully, she's a junior, so she doesn't apply anywhere 'til next summer, but we want to compile as much info as possible now. She emailed a pre-pharm counselor in the pharmacy school, so we're waiting on that info, too.

Another consideration is the GPA and test scores requirement for Honors at different schools. The average student attending UF would qualify for the Honors program at most other Florida colleges, but can not meet the UF requirements for Honors. With so many top students attending UF, the GPA and SAT numbers keep going up.

Zebes-
I would be interesting in learning about the pre pharm stuff for my D2. She is a hs senior applying to colleges now and is considering pharmacy (among other fields in health and medicine).

Was she considering the 2 year + phram, 3 year + phram, or BS/PharmD program?

My D may be looking at applying to pharmD programs after her sophomore year of college ( I believe that is when most apply, you need to have about 62 credits, unless you are preaccepted to a combo program). My D may well not be admitted to UF this February and so will probably be doing her first few years elsewhere. Only a handful of colleges offer the pharmacyD program in Florida (UF, NovaSoutheastern, and FAMU).

Seiclan, I'll let you know if we here anything back from UF. My d's considering the 2 + 4 pharmD plan. I think that I have that right. After the "sophomore" year and finishing pre-regs, then apply to pharm school. She'd like to go to UF for that, I believe ... which means, since UF mostly only takes in-state for pharmacy, she's going to stay in-state for her first two years, whether it's at UF or UCF.

I have been trying to find the stats on how many non UF students that the pharmacy school accepts into the pharmD program but haven't yet been successful. Pharmacy at UF may still be a reach for my child regardless. She is not "honors material". Just a good kid who likes chemistry.
