Someone told me that Columbia requires that one of the two teacher recs has to be from a math teacher!??!!? I am applying to Columbia College and had already submitted all my papers to my teachers about 2 months ago. I had never heard of that requirement, and I just tried looking around on their website and didnt see that either.

Is this true? Did anyone get in early who didnt use a math teacher as a rec?
Thanks!!

mdbasile, you might as well try and call the office but they are going to be closed today...other than that, i dont know what else you can really do.

I wouldn't freak out...they will review your app only if you have one rec in. I would still get a rec from your son's math teacher and get it in even if it's past the deadline. They're not terribly strict on deadlines for recs and transcripts.

Thanks all - fortunately we actually have one more day thanks to our(and being from Michigan I do mean "our") deceased President Ford's day of mourning - all the post offices are closed until the 3rd.

So he should have no problem getting the recs in by wed...

The whole thing was my fault - so I feel responsible....

He is planning on asking 2 teachers last years' and this years - they may both do it... we'll write and explain the situation and I am sure that won't be a big deal....

mdbasile: You have more time to get your teacher's rec in. The deadline is for the student, not for other info - transcript, rec letters, etc. The will usually give your school a week or two past dealine to get their stuff in.

I wouldn't necessarily expect the teachers to have the recs completed so quickly on such short notice. Perhaps he could email them today (if he has their addresses) and give them a heads up.

Yea he is - actually his junior year teacher said no.

He had a pretty good tale - since he had this all done months ago and the recs have been "in" since mid Nov - this was a "oh *****" scenario and she had pity on him(doesn't hurt he is one of her best students in a tough class where a bunch of kids have been dropping because it is ruining thier GPAs....). In any event it was very cool of her to help out.

Just wondering, how is it your fault if your son's application isn't done correctly? There is no reason you shouldn't help him, but shouldn't he be the to go online and ask people about the rules. Unless of course your planning to join him at Columbia to help with the number theory homework.

Of course he is who is responsible - he asked for help in reviewing all the stuff and I missed it too. I simply felt bad that I had missed it also.

FWIW - I happened to come across the issue while I was having coffee one sunday morning and reading the various threads here... quite entertainimg I might add.

Hmm.... not interested in going back to school... too busy enjoying the life after...

.... and that was sort of an obnoxious question.
