Somers Hall - Mt Vernon Campus

Hello
My son was assigned to Somers in a double. He wants to be in FB. What are the chances that one can switch rooms/dorms to FB?

Any thoughts on Somers?

Thanks.

The chances of someone on FB accepting a transfer to MV is slim to none. Most students want to be on FB so there are always some that end-up on MV instead.

With that said, Somers is good dorm. It’s relatively new, the room layouts are nice, there are a lot of students in Somers (unlike some of the smaller dorms on MV). Something he’ll appreciate later: the stop for the Vern Express is right outside his door. This means less distance to cover in the heat/cold and/or inclement weather.

Now, I’m biased as I was on MV my freshman year and really enjoyed myself. If it’s encouraging, I was initially disappointed to not be on FB but ended-up loving it. There are plenty of things that MV has to offer.

My daughter is also in Somers, and also disappointed because she wanted to be in FB. I don’t understand where here room is. She is on the L floor? The building is supposed to be 3 floors with the second floor being on ground level, and there are floors 1, 2, and 3. Do you know?

@tamtiger and @WhartonWoman, my son is in the same boat! He’s in Somers, disappointed, but trying to be positive about it. He also has a double room on the L floor, which we wondered about. And were worried it would be a dungeon! So he emailed GW housing to ask, and here is the explanation: “L does refer to the lower floor. Floor 2 is the ground level due to the nature of the campus, and Somers being built on a hillside. Do be rest assured that even though L appears to be 2 floors below the ground floor it still has equal and ample amount of natural light coming into the room.” This made us feel a little better, hope it helps you too!

Per my contact at the University:

Thank you @MomTCAJ and @NHuffer . I appreciate the information. Hopefully that is correct. I think they will like the Vern more than they think. I liked it a lot when we visited. But I do think everyone needs natural light. No one should live in a place without it IMO.

Thank you for your replies. I have also been telling him that he will enjoy MV better than FB. If he feels like partying at FB he can always go puke there and come back to shower and sleep in MV :). He understands. But if there is an opportunity he would love to switch. He and his new room mate seems to have bonded as well, so unless they get a double (which is impossible at FB) they will end up staying in MV.
