Songs that impact you when you hear them

Wonderful idea. There are so many songs that mark a place in time or a person for me.

For my son: Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.
For my daughter: My girl by the Temptations, Love Me Tender by Elvis and Weave Me The Sunshine by Peter Paul and Mary (I used to sing these to her starting when she was a baby but probably until age 12 or something like that).
For my wife: The Joy That is You and Old Love by Neal and Leandra.
For both kids: For Baby (For Bobby) by John Denver. Forever Young by Bob Dylan (but I like Joan Baez’s version better).

Sophomore/Junior Year: Lay Lady Lay and a bunch of Bob Dylan. Crosby Stills and Nash (Suite Judy Blue Eyes) and others), Neil Young (Heart of Gold), Gordon Lightfoot (Early Mornin Rain)
Senior Year: Crazy Love by Van Morrison.

First Year of Grad School: Linda Ronstadt: Long, Long Time, Faithless Love, Willin’, When Will I Be Loved, …

Second Year of Grad School: Elvis Costello (Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes, Oliver’s Army, Alison, …), Steve Forbert (Romeo’s Tune, Complications).

Please Come to Boston by Dave Loggins.
Danny’s Song by Loggins and Messina.

My Happy Song: Dancing in the Moonlight by Harvest. A few Beach Boys Songs:

More recent:

Angelina Jordan sings in a way that is somehow very moving: Summertime (when she was 8), Bohemian Rhapsody, Suspicious Minds, Always on My Mind. She is a star about to happen. She’s mostly on YouTube.

Janileigh Cohen: Blues Run The Game, Long Black Veil. She’s mostly on Youtube as well.

Leonard Cohen: Bird on The Wire, Hallelujah, Suzanne, Dance Me to the End of Love.
Billie Eilish: Ocean Eyes.
Toussaint McCall: Nothing Takes the Place of You.
Etta James At Last.
Janis Ian Seventeen.

I had never heard of Angelina Jordan before. What an extraordinary talent.

She is currently 16. She has been signed by Republic Records as a major project like Ariana Grande. The piano player on the Suspicious Minds video is a Grammy-winner who is Studio Director for Republic Records. They are clearly grooming her for stardom.

Yes, thank you for sharing! I was not at all familiar with her.

I’ve discovered a few unknowns or “forgottens” by creating a playlist from this thread. Also some versions/arrangements I was not as familiar with. So thank you, @hebegebe for creating this topic and everyone for contributing.

I was at dinner last night and the trio performing played John Denver’s Country Roads. My first thought was of my dad and next was “I forgot to include that on CC!”

ETA: I have quite eclectic taste in music so I think I’ll keep most of the songs in the playlist. Exceptions may be one of @Catcherinthetoast ’s summer camp songs… those may get listened to a couple times for a laugh then be bid farewell. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::rofl:

I had no idea what the response would when I created it and it’s been great to see everyone’s responses. Reconnected with some old favorites and found some interesting new music as well.

I think that a person’s music tastes tells a bit about their personality. Some picks were a bit surprising to say the least.

Heard “We May Never pass This Way Again” by Seals and Crofts this morning. My senior prom theme song. Makes me think of my HS days and friends…

Great list!

Chairman of the Board brought back a great memory for me. Dancing at the Beach Music festival on Jekyll Island. Swingin’ Medallions, etc. playing. :ocean::parasol_on_ground::sunny::shell::notes::microphone::trumpet::musical_keyboard::saxophone:

I have been listening to Mary Chapin Carpenter recently because we are seeing her in concert next month. First live concert in a long while. Bruce Springsteen was the last major concert we went to. . Saw Billy Price after that but he’s not a big star. And then the pandemic! Songs I love by Mary Chapin Carpenter but doubt they’ll be on her set list-

Only a Dream . I was the “kid sister” so this one gets to me. But, very emotional in general.

I Am a Town.

Finally, anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son (Official Music Video) - YouTube This was the most popular song played by a CCR cover band headed by a gf’s big brother when we were in middle school. Their family lived on base and their dad was a CO of an aircraft carrier. The song brings back a huge mixed bag of memories.

I had an old college roommate that I hadn’t been in contact with for a few years message me today because of the Joni Mitchell news. She said she always thinks of me because I played guitar and sang lots of Joni Mitchell songs in college. It was good to hear from her and good to see Joni Mitchell. It’s very heartwarming to see so many younger musicians show her such love and reverence at Newport. There are so many of her songs that I love!
