Soo tired of this affirmative action bs!!!

Ive finaly lost it today. Ive heard a million stories about overly qualified kids, who are near perfect in every respect, getting rejected from schools that they should have gotten into with their eyes closed, simply because they are asian! I have also heard a million stories about less qualified candidates who get accepted to almost all of their reach schools, simply because they are black!! I have experienced this phenomenon myself, when i was waitlisted for Carnegie Mellon University while my african american counterpart , who has a way lower GPA and an even lower SAT score than me, got accepted! This less than par counter part also got accepted to UChicago! Now on CC ive seen a million threads that include stories about extremely intelligent asian students who have been rejected from UChicago. What is happening??? and why are schools doing something soo stupid like this?? I know for a fact that my peer will not be able to handle the work load at UChicago, he has horrible study habbits and he lacks good work ethic, and im not just trying to be rude just being honest! If the United States truely wants to be able to compete with China and India, it can no longer afford to give this unfair advantage to the less intelligent kids and hold back the children with a greater apptitude for learning in the name of Race. Its disgusting seriously! This affirmative action thing has become too prevalent and its hold us back as a country! Any thoughts?? ( and please no lectures about slavery, or suffering, or the struggle for african americans, trust me i understand, but iaffirmative action has been taken too far and now its holding people back)

I’d welcome a lecture on the struggles of African-Americans in the US; I’d just counter with the point that Asians didn’t exactly have a blast when they came either.

But you see its no longer about that. Who cares what happened in the past? Its time to move on! We need to focus on the future and taking back our title as the leader in science and technology. We cant do that if we live in the past and feel bad for our sins and try to hold back our most intelligent youth!

Hang on. We all know that, statistically, African-American students tend to be much less qualified than Asian-American students…are you suggesting that this has to do with intelligence?

no it does not and that is not what i was suggesting. I, as well as everyone else Im sure, know that race has nothing to do with intelligence level. Im just saying that admissions should be based solely on academics so we can be sure to have the best of the applicant pool getting the best instruction available. Everything should be race blind!

If the black applicant has higher stats and seems more qualified than a white, asian, latino student than they should get the admission. Im not preferring one race over another, Im saying lets be fair to all!

Chicago is not just looking for an applicant with strong stats. They are, moreover, looking for an applicant with a particular mindset. All those “extremely intelligent asian students” you mention likely lacked that mindset.

Moreover, these very selective schools can accept or reject whoever they want for whatever reason. it is entirely up to them. you don’t deserve to get in anywhere. abandon this idea that you are entitled to admission at a selective institution because you have worked very hard.

So you don’t think there should be anything holistic about admissions? All about stats? And I notice you say that America should lead in science and technology…what about literature, history, etc.?

Sadly, the fact is that based on stats alone, universities would have almost no black students and no poor students. Clearly there’s something wrong with that, since there are just as many intelligent people in both of those groups as in any other group.

And lastly, good grades and hard-working…does not equal intelligent. I’m sorry you got rejected and feel that affirmative action is to blame. Personally I think it should be done on an economic basis. But one thing colleges consider is the advantages an applicant has had - or hasn’t - and potential rather than just academic record.

I’m hoping that whatever top school you apply to is very diverse, so you get a heaping dosage of something we like to call…reality.

Look, it’s not all about academics. It’s about PERSONALITY. Top schools have immense networking opportunities, if only you’re willing to put your foot in the door and say “I want those opportunities!”" Sadly, there is a stereotype that Asians don’t take advantage of these, that they simply only go to school to learn and leave. And it doesn’t help when you see a stream of near-identical applicants, i.e. “I have a 2350 SAT score and a 4.4 W GPA and I played flute/clarinet/piano for four years and I spent a summer in <insert third=”" world=“” country=“” here=“”>…"</insert>

Look, there’s a stereotype out there. You’ll have to overcome it. Be different. Play guitar instead of piano. Write a novel. Go outside and introspect. Do something different.

that is the stupidest **** I have ever heard. So you are saying that no one should work hard anymore because its not gonna help them get into a selective school anyway. Clearly you dont know anyone who has been accepted to a selective school and you probably are not a very strong applicant yourself. wow that has to be the absolute dumbest thing I have ever heard congradulations! haha! You are an idiot my friend!

So the kid who has never had to work a job in his life and had his mom plan out his entire high school career with a 2350 SAT/4.0 GPA is somehow working harder than the low-income kid in the projects with a 1800/3.7 yet has to work 40 hours a week and support his family?

Test scores show little about how hard one has worked.

Someone’s just a bit teed off…

Moreover, we in the US do not have the view that China (and to a lesser extent, India) does that minorities are to simply be disregarded and ought not be advanced. Han Chinese occupy almost all of the top jobs and positions in China. Upper-caste Hindu Indians make up almost all the top jobs in India. China especially has no desire, as the US does, to advance their minorities. US colleges see fit to bring a variety of perspectives, backgrounds, and people to their institutions. While I think that race-based affirmative action is not the way to do this, I think that bringing such diversity most certainly ought be a goal of a good college.

If you don’t like it, go back to China, Korea, or Japan where you are to be judged only on your academic statistics and ability to spit back set material.

well Im done and attending Boston University so this is no longer about me. And by saying that if admissions was solely based on academics there would be no black students should be insulting to african americans. They are just as intelligent and capable of attaining merits that would make them competitive. I am all about diversity. Dont get me wrong, I have black family members and latino family members and am very open minded. And yes we should give attention to history and literature but when Korea and Iran are develope nuclear arsenal that match ours and taking away our edge, when India and China are producing more doctors and taking our jobs and American companies perfer to outsource their IT jobs to India and China something is wrong! we need the best in Science and technology!

and you, my friend, are an obnoxious, entitled, obtuse, presumptuous, and ignorant brat.

Well, too bad so sad?

Of course they’re just as intelligent, that goes without saying. The sad fact is that, in general, black students are economically disadvantaged (due to a long history of racial discrimination, surprisingly!) and therefore don’t necessarily have 8 hours a day to study for their classes and SATs, and don’t necessarily live in the nice part of town with the good schools, and don’t necessarily have that wonderful sense of self-entitlement that you have. But let’s not leave the Native Americans and Hispanics out of this. Surely you’re mad at them too?

good lord, how ignorant are you?

you think Iran and DPRK are anywhere near matching us in nuclear capability? No! We are miles and miles ahead of every single nuclear nation in the world! Do you think that our jobs are being outsourced overseas because people over there are more qualified? Hell no! They are often less qualified, have nothing but book smarts, no ability to apply their learning, but will accept far lower wages.

And I can see the useless lessons of clear and precise expression have been sacrificed for you in favour of either math/science/engineering knowledge or inflammatory rhetoric.

NO IM NOT. surprisingly I think that you all have assumed I am some sort of rich well off brat. That is far from the truth. I actually am what you would call a high need student. I have a job and have had a job for the past 3 years. My father is disabled and my mother is cashier, just becasue im asian does not mean that I am rich!!! But i never let that stop me, I still studied and have a high GPA! I still studied and got a high SAT score. SO i cannot understnad what makes my black friends struggles more important than mine??? I am not angry at anyone, this is not the applicants fault, this is the schools taking affirmative action to an extreme and making it even more difficullt for asian students!

and i didnt say that Iran or DPRK have weapons better than ours i said they are developing weapons that will surpass our unleswe continue to advance, because we are at a stand still in the feild of technology! and India and China do produce more doctors and engineers than us, who are more qualified, you know why?? because they pick the best of their applicant pool to get the best instruction and then those doctors move here for residency, which is why hospitals are saturated with foreign doctors! they are more qualified!

Sometimes being interesting and intelligent is more important than having perfect grades and scores. Thank god we’re not like China and India.
