I’m finalizing my course selections for next year and here’s what I’ve come up with so far.
AP World History
AP Art History
AP Biology
Pre-AP Chemistry
Pre-AP Algebra II
Pre-AP Spanish III
Pre-AP English II
Varsity Tennis Fall/Spring
What do you guys think? Is this a rigorous enough schedule (by 10th grade standards) for Ivy League or other top colleges?Any advice or changes I should make? Comments are appreciated.
Ivies will not be impressed by piling up APs (“it’s not a game of who has the most APs, wins” dixit Stanford).
1-2 AP classes sophomore year is more than many take.
Keep your schedule as is but replace AP Bio with another class. If you are science-oriented, take honors physics, if you are social science/humanities reinforce that interest with a class from that field.
We suggest waiting on AP Bio is that we have seen many a student here on CC try to take an advanced class like that too early that they are not perpared for and then come to CC asking what to do as they are only getting a C.
Art History is very time-intensive, at least at my HS, and it’s definitely miles above AP Geography. The essays require in-depth analysis of the principles of art and iconography, as well as cultural context behind each piece (there are hundreds of different images that are a part of the curriculum that are fair game to be covered on each AP exam) and you will regret taking it if you don’t actually have a deep interest in or aptitude for the humanities. AP Biology is also very rigorous, as well, and underclassmen are usually totally barred from taking it, but review videos/materials are plentiful. I earned a 5 on the AP Biology exam junior year with the help of some excellent review materials.
Other than those caveats, this looks to be an okay, manageable sophomore schedule. Be sure to develop some extra-curricular activities that distinguish you from other applicants.
@r2v2018 Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate it. I am probably going to ask some of my sophomore friends who are in AP Art History how hard it is at our school (from what I’ve heard, it’s not as hard as the other two APs I will be taking next year), but after looking at the released CB art history exam and FRQ, I will have to agree with you that Human geo is nothing compared to that!! As for ECs, I will keep my class rank up so I can apply for NHS at my school 2nd semester of sophomore year (you need to be top 15%) and I am also considering joining the math and science clubs at my high school next year. However, I don’t want too many ECs, because of tennis practice everyday (this year we have before school, but next year we’ll have both before and after school) and I think even tennis by itself would be ample enough, homework, and studying in general.
About that 5 you got in Bio, would you be willing to tell me about the extra review materials you used? I’m kind of worried about Bio next year cuz lots of kids have a grade they didn’t think they would get in AP Bio, and I want to start preparing ahead of time.
Anyway, thank you for your suggestions. have a nice day.
@MYOS1634 The thing is, and I know I will get criticized for this, but I do happen to be science-oriented and since the only 2 science classes offered for sophomores are Chemisry and AP Biology, I feel like I should be taking both of these classes to show future colleges my interest in science.
Colleges don’t “expect” you to double up in science - especially not as a Sophomore. The time for that is senior year.
They do expect you to take bio, chem, physics (regular or Honors; for physics, AP physics 1 is also an option) then one of those AP.
You could double up chemistry and physics if you wished to take AP Bio as a junior and AP chemistry as a senior. Can’t you take AP Bio as a junior?
How many sophomores who take AP Bio take the exam and score a 4? 5?
AP art history is a very difficult class. It helps if you’ve taken AP Euro or AP world already. Combining AP world and AP art history would probably work, reinforcing the material from each class, but adding AP Bio to these will make this schedule unmanageable. And no one will give you a pass because you’re a sophomore who took three APs - they won’t think you were courageous but rather foolish.
AP human geography is a gateway to AP course to introduce freshmen to the methodology and expectations - double the volume and complexity of content for a regular AP.
I think I might take out AP Art History. So what do you guys think is better for me: to just stick with AP Art History or to change to Principles Of Health Science (a pre-ap weighted class)?
