Sophmor year got a D in math

so I got a D in algebra 2 H with probably the worst teacher ever and now in Junior year, I want to go to USC with an athletic scholarship in swim. Junior year I got a score of 1430. I aced the math section with a score of 760 and an English score of 670. I am doing well in my classes this year, so far getting a GPA of 3.3 when sophomore year I got a GPA of 2.6 with that D

On the PSAT i got a score of 1430 is what i meant to say

So what are my chances of going to a good college such as usc

Not gonna lie…that GPA is gonna hurt. Overall you are sitting somewhere near a 3.0 right?

labegg is right, that GPA is gonna be serious dead weight unless you have a heavy enough schedule to justify it. PSAT looks good but what really matter are you ACT and SAT scores.

But of course all that could be irrelevant depending on how fast you are in the water. If you’re admitted as a member of the team they may forgive low stats…how low is a matter of how good you are vs how selective the college is.

yup just about

but if I take it during summer school and do well in the semester to come, will that help it at all?

and schools such as ucsd or uc irvine, usc

Re: #7

For UCs, you need at least a 3.0 GPA (as recalculated the UC way) and math including algebra 2 and geometry to (among other a-g requirements) be minimally eligible. However, most of the campuses are substantially more selective than minimum eligibility. If you earn a C or higher in the spring semester of algebra 2, that will validate the fall semester grade deficiency for a-g subjects, but the D grade will still be included in your GPA, unless replaced by a repeat of the same course.

repeating the course as in like summer school right?’

I would suggest if possible - summer school to repeat that course as it seems to be really dragging down your GPA. If not, best case scenario is to work your ass off on future math classes in order to prove that the D was a fluke. If you keep the GPA as high as possible while maintaining your competitiveness in swim, that would be for the best.

was there a predominant reason you got a D? like if it had to do with family or your health you could probably explain that in your app in the additional info section. your PSAT obviously shows that it probably was a fluke. just do everything you can to raise the GPA  i wouldn’t give up

To be honest, you probably just shot your chances down. Your weighted GPA this year is a 3.3, which even if it was unweighted would be about .5 points behind the average. You would be far behind the 25th percentile. Even if you got a 1500 on the SAT, they have plenty of people with that score. A lot of people can take standardized tests and do well, it’s a skill. I am not being rude, but be realistic. Just don’t put yourself in that position where you convince yourself you’ll get in and then it doesn’t happen. I definitely encourage you to keep trying, but don’t make it the be-all end-all. Also, summer courses show up that you took the class twice on your transcript, it’s not a free way out.
