Sophmore Year (gr10)

for everyone whos going into grade 10 now yay~! x)

can anyone give me tips on how to get straight As?! I sort of messed up last year with 3Bs(art,english,socials). I want to recover! haha. Also, i have like no ecs at the moment....can anyone give me suggestions on what to do? thanks~!

Okay, to get straight As, you need to study and find out what the teacher expects from you. That is the biggest necessity. Organization, memorization, and an attention span that can endure the horrors of school also help.

For ECs, I recommend just finding something you like. Go around and try new groups at the beginning of the year and find out which of them suit you.

Listen to your school announcements and go to club meetings.

3 B's? Come on now. You didn't screw up. I screwed up. I got several D's, C's, B's, and A's, yet by the end of junior year I can still have a 3.86 UW GPA which isn't too horrible for the school I want to go to. But anyways gooo CO'11! We survived freshman year :) I also want straight A's this year (obviously). When do you go back to school?
And as far as EC suggestions go... think of what you can do. Think of all the clubs in your school (if you have a yearbook from last year that can help) and think of which ones you wouldn't mind joining or which ones relate to what you want to do. Like obviously if you want to be a doctor, join the health club, and volunteer at a hospital. ...which is what I plan on doing :) Sports and music same thing.

find your passion ~ sophomore year is really crucial for that.

You seem like one of those people who are overly stressed about college. All I have to say is - relax! I've had more than 10 B's throughout my years in high school and I still made it into one of my (two) top choices. Just put your best effort and try to learn - you won't regret it. If the best you can do is a B, then be happy with the B knowing that you tried your best.

As for ECs - find one or two things that you're really passionate in and pursue them heavily. I only had a couple ECs when I applied to colleges, but they were unique and my life centered around them. When I read over my application, the ECs did not seem lacking.

Just try your best, do what's natural, but still be proactive. Everything will turn out well in the end.

I'm going to be a sophomore too! For study habits, find your niche of where to study and when. For me studying with coffee with no noise helps the most.

My EC's are going to be
HOSA club ( hopefully i'll get into the nutrition national competition ) I got close last year
Medical Mission to Southern Mexico to help kids with cleft pallets ( non religious trip)
Hospital Volunteering I have around 300 hours now, probably will get 180 more
JV golf team or having a job... Haven't decided yet
More volunteer hours - feed the homeless or something like that

That's all my EC im planning on for now, but im going to find some more

I had a 4.75w 3.86un with 1 B this year. -_-
My EC's are from 9th grade are:

Advisor to the Board of non-profit

Advisory member of Art Club

Founding Captain Varsity Science Olympiad Team

Mayor's Youth Council Parliamentarian

Teen Court Attorney

Church Handbell Choir ringer

Church Youth Group member

Christian Fellowship Club member

Think Tank member

Strategic Boards Club Member

County Junior Historian

Volunteering

School:
Clerical volunteering, Installed Wireless Cards, Repair of School Laptops, Created and distributed handout on proper laptop usage

Community:
Volunteer with Mayor’s Youth Council, Volunteering with County Public Library, Intern with Community Affairs Department of the City

I have heard that Sophomore is the year to find your passions and focus on those. So that's what I'll try to do. Many of the clubs like "Strategic boards club" I still be a member of... but it's not important enough to but on my application.

12 days until my physical high school starts! 21 until my college starts! 31 until my online high school starts!

^ Does your school give weighted grades for honors classes?

Lol, aigiqif's weighed GPA is about the same as mine. I have a 4.765, and I will be a Junior next year.

I plan on these being my ECs:
French Club 4yrs
Yearbook 4 yrs (hopefully editor-in-chief senior year, and an editor junior year)
Key Club 3yrs
Possibly Track 3yrs
Possibly Mu Alpha Theta 2yrs
Quill&Scroll 2yrs (honor society when you're on the yearbook)
NHS 2yrs
A Lot of volunteer hours, a majority of them at a hospital. I already have some but not like 300 hours like op^ has
I am also getting a job at LEAST by age 16, and I kind of had a job last year

Written down it doesn't seem like anything special, and it doesn't really reflect my interests which I hate, but I want to do all of that^. The main would be yearbook because I like it, hospital volunteering because I want to be pre-med, and if I can get in shape by then, track. I'm also taking all honors classes (like everyone else on here) and some APs. Hopefully that'll be good enough for UF :)
Oh and what are all you sophomores planning on taking next year?

OH OH and I forgot about Health Club. Duh. 3yrs for that, or minimum 2yrs.

I'm worried about the same thing...
9th grade I only had 1EC which was stage manager, set design and set supervisor for the spring play. I don't know how that will count because I had a few different jobs working in the show. I messed up terribly with my grades though (90 average at the end of the semester) so your in better shape than I am.

Rofllmfao, all you dedicated people, so peachy...especially aigiqinf (you sound like my cousin).

Count me in as one of those rising sophomores as well. I'm probably the laziest person you know. I haven't done a single EC this year (I didn't even know what EC was, infact...) except Orchestra...but that's a class so it just just done out of a whim. Freshman year was simply games, computer, friends, movies...and sleeping. No time for studying at all...didn't care about college or knew much before I came here.
I play like 6 different games now rather exhaustively, and I'm on the computer at least 10 hours a day during summer, 7 hours during schooltime. I sleep at 1am and wake up at 12pm/1pm during summer...right now. I don't only play games, though...sports/exercising/movies/friends should do the trick as well.

"Accidentally" stumbling across this website wasn't a bad idea, I'm planning to do a couple EC's starting this year. As for my GPA, I didn't screw up in that area-4.0 with very minimal studying/no effort, but quite honestly I don't go to one of those super-difficult private schools with 10 AP's/year so...I mainly had some honors and stuff. Nothing too shabby or great.

Oh and I play pokemon. Quite a lot.
For both honors and AP. (I had 1 AP Freshman year.) But you need a 96 for a 4.0. I had 2 required standard classes, 6 honors, and 1 AP. I averaged I think about a 95/100 unweighted. I go to a special school that only offers Honors... and our honors are almost AP level.

AP Calculus BC
AP Physics B
Honors English II
Honors Chemistry
SPA 111 (S)
SPA 112 (H)
SPA 211 (H)
SPA 212 (H)

My school actually doesn't offer any APs... so I have to take them online... and I'm the only one in my school doing so. I'll also be self-studying a good amount of APs.

As for Sophomore ECs... I'm really hoping to get a state position... but I'd rather not say what it is (it's not a club... it's a government agency). I'm not sure what else I'll get my self into. :)

My god, aiginf...are you overextending yourself? Even for the top colleges, all that isn't really necessary - it's good that you're dedicated, though...in half awe and half jealousy as I probably can't ever get myself to do all that.

Either way, for like the 30th time with the "whatz ur schedulz lulz"...
-Precalc
-PE - Weightlifting (as I've said, I'll pass on the only alternative - aerobic dancing)
-AP world
-Chem
-English
-French
-Orchestra

you can add some flashy "honors" title somewhere in there, which I don't care about, really...it's the highest my school offers. No 8 AP's, but that'll do fine justice in my part.

Btw, what is:

SPA 111 (S)
SPA 112 (H)
SPA 211 (H)
SPA 212 (H) [/quote}
This stuff?

LOL Have you seen DataBox? I'm only human... I can't compete with genii like him! He keeps me motivated!

SPA 111 -Elementary Spanish I (Weighted as standard)
SPA 112- Elementary Spanish II (Weighted as honors)
SPA 211- Intermediate Spanish I (Weighted as honors)
SPA 212- Intermediate Spanish II (Weighted as honors)

These are dual enrollment classes... I have 1 per quarter. Call me crazy... because I probably am. In fact, I think my school has some kind of problem with it... so I have to call them next week. Can you believe I've been debating my schedule since like March!?

Oh... and I assume this is like the official 2008/2009 Sophomore thread?

LOL Have you seen DataBox?
No...although with a screenname like DataBox I wonder...

Dual enrollment? So you're like taking courses in college too? Wow. Nice on overworking yourself, but really I hope you're interested in the extra courses you're taking because a couple extra AP's won't mean anything...as far as classes are concerned if you just make the most out of your school it's all G.
no.

Either way, the only thing I'm doing extra this year may be self-studying an AP, because the topic is the ownz. My goals for this year are to actually study...and I'm trying to study now 20 minutes a day (which is astronomically high considering it's summer) to start a studying "habit" so I won't be screwed during schoolyear.

GL to all the rising sophs...to a better year than last year, hopefully, as it was a pretty much fiasco for me in terms of academics/EC's/studying/...

Do you mean the courses I'm self-studying or the college courses? All the APs I'll be self-studying I'm interested in. As for the Spanish... I think a new language will be fun... plus I need it.
no.
It will probably be the first day of school until I'm absolutely sure about everything... maybe later! LOL -_-

Really, this year I have two very important goals:

Getting into my state magnet, and getting into and paying for Harvard Summer School. Everything pretty much falls into those goals. :)

Wow.

Those are some...weird goals. Especially the latter, all you need is money...I definitely won't be wasting over $8000 for anything, since I'm not financially able to. I don't think I ever will spend money on prep books either.

Here are some tips to receive/maintain straight A's-
Do NOT procrastinate: Always finish your work ahead of time. For example, if your teacher gives you a project due in 2 weeks, finish it in one. This way, you are ahead of schedule and have time for EC's and other homework.
Stay organized: Keep your backpack in check so you always know where everything is. Update your planner everyday so you know what needs to be done. Have your homework in one area. Additionally, it is always helpful to having a filing folder to keep your graded work at home. This will help you look back in assignments if your grade is incorrect and it will keep your binder clutter-free of old homework.
Choose a wise place to do your work: Make sure that the area in which you study and do your homework is clean and especially quiet. This will help you concentrate on the task at hand without having to worry about a dirty room or loud music interrupting your reading.
Make in incentive to do your homework: Lock yourself in your room if you need to, and don't let yourself out until you are completely finished with your work. Say to yourself "If i read XX pages today, I won't have to read tomorrow and can have free time." Give yourself little treats such as candies after you finish your work. Also, it is helpful to restrict yourself from any access to a television or computer (unless typing) until AFTER you are done.
