Sophomore Courses/Tips

Hi there, I was wondering if anybody has any advice for my course load next year? Like general tips about time management, etc.

Here is what I will be taking:

Honors French IV
Honors Biology
Honors Chemistry
Honors English
Honors Pre-Calculus
AP US History

Two lab sciences are a lot. I’d reconsider taking bio and chem in the same year, even at the H level.

Do you have classes you need like art/music/gym to fulfill graduation requirements? I would take those rather than 2 science classes.

I go to a boarding school where you can earny art, music and gym classes after school so that is what I did to finish all my required credits for freshman year.

You didn’t take Biology H in 9th?
I guess at this point you’re going to have to double your Sciences at some point sooner or later if you want to take Physics and AP science classes.

Sched looks fine. Typically 10th graders take some sort of world History while APUSH is more of an 11th grade thingy, but your school may be different.

Is APUSH a 10th grade class at your school? Because generally it’s taken in junior year, with AP world or Ap euro taken Sophomore year.

I agree…2 lab sciences at once is a bit much. Why didn’t you take Honors Bio last year?
WHat math classes have you taken? Did you do well?

APUSH is usually a junior year course.

Are you a stellar student who can do well? then you will be okay
Are you someone who didn’t take the right courses last year and you are trying desperately to accelerate? then you may not be okay

Don’t be in a hurry with APUSH…you have two more years! Colleges don’t care if you took it sophomore year, they care that you did well.

At our high school and other area high schools 9th graders take US history 1 cp/honors and 10th grade take US History 2 or APUSH then 11th grade is for world history or AP World.

Take the typical history for your grade - colleges are fully aware that is is done in different orders per school and won’t think your ahead but they will wonder about the need to take two lab sciences sophomore year.

I realize that maybe this wasn’t the right platform to post this question since none of you will be knowledgable about my school and its course structure (prerequisites, rigor, etc)
My mistake.
I AM NOT ASKING FOR ADVICE ON IF I SHOULD ADD OR DROP ANY CLASSES.
I will clarify that my school starts everyone off freshman year at the same science and recommend select students to double up and even offers structure and support to do so. Doubling up is for students who are seeking to advance in science, and intend to take AP Biology. I am one of these students.
APUSH is offered to sophomores & juniors at my school. A majority of Sophomores actually end up taking it for more of a challenge. An astonishing amount of my class next year is Sophomores.
I asked for time management, hoping people who have taken these courses could give me tips on how to study for them. Topics and experiences taking these classes. The purpose of this thread was not for Parents or adults telling me which classes I should add or drop instead for my sake and how it will look for college. I am not taking these classes to “accelerate,” nor was I a struggling student. I have taken the prerequisites for all of these courses and was recommended for them.

If anybody does have any study tips for these classes, please feel free to leave them here.

@fieldhockeylvr For pre-calculus, just do the homework and pay attention in class and you’ll be fine. Biology is a lot of memorization so don’t procrastinate and read the book the night before the test. For APUSH, I suggest making outlines to help condense information. Lastly, if you don’t have an agenda I suggest getting one if you struggle with time management.

@MoonKnight this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much.

Work load is very school specific. Are there juniors at your school that you could ask to get a better sense of what to expect?

APUSH at my D’s HS was a ton of writing - even more than her H english course that year. I think that was the class with the most work her sophomore year. What helped my D was working as far ahead as possible on the weekends. She played a sport sophomore year and always had some school work with her if there was ever any down time between games or on the bus to away games.

Don’t procrastinate, be organized, and if something doesn’t make sense right away, ask for help from a teacher immediately. IMO good advice for everyone ; )

@fieldhockeylvr Your welcome. If you have any more questions about high school, feel free to pm me.

My sophomore year I took:
Span 2 honors
marketing dual credit
health
ap world history
ap lang
pltw biomed
pre/cal and trig honors
chem honors

I would say my course load was pretty similar to yours. I loved spanish, so I would say if you love learning French that class should not be too difficult. AP World was harder than APUSH, so I don’t think that will be hard for you. APUSH was a great class in my opinion. Pre Cal and Honors Chem were challenging but if you study and pay attention you will end up fine. My only concern is the two lab sciences as a sophomore, but at my school juniors and seniors doubled up on AP Chem and AP Bio and ended up fine. It will be a lot of work, but if you learn the time you need for each class I think it is possible.
