Sophomore Fall Schedule

What classes should I take next fall? I was a DA this year and took A100, X104, M118, K201, M119, X220, W131, 2 S&H's, 1 N&M. I also plan on taking E201 at the community college by my house over the summer online. I looked at the fall schedule and these classes worked well in a schedule together (no Friday classes again), and seems like a fairly challenging schedule, and doesn't screw me for the next semester:

A201 (J. Head)
X204 (K. Ryan)
E202 (P. Graf)
L201 (Langvardt)
TEL-T160 (S&H) (Staff)

I'd also appreciate input on good professors, but they all seem pretty fair from the grade distribution, anyway

Graf is a great professor and I really enjoyed him. No experience with any of the other professors.

Other than that, it looks like a pretty good schedule.

Toffa, it looks like you are on kind of a slow pace to graduate, with 27 credits at end of freshman year, when it takes 31x4 to get to 124 needed for graduation. Do you have other credit? If not, you might try taking some distribution option classes in summers at your cc, using the credit transfer service to make sure IU will accept them from your cc. An online psychology or astronomy class maybe. I would try to get as many distribution option classes out of the way before the start of junior year as possible, especially if you are a finance or accounting major, because taking four three-credit accounting and finance classes is already a pretty big load without having to squeeze in distribution option classes.

You could finish your distribution option by the start of Icore by doing this:

Summer 2011 – E201, one A&H at 100-level
Fall 2011 – one 3 credit 300-level class (S&H?) that also satisfies international dimension
Spr. 2012 – one 3 credit 300-level class (S&H?) that also satisfies international dimension
Summer 2011 – one A&H, one S&H, one M&N – all at 100-level

Maybe one or both of the S&H classes you have already taken also counts for the international dimension, which would make things easier for you. You would do the 300-level classes this coming year at Bloomington, as community colleges will not have any 300-level COAS classes that IU will accept, but they usually have many one-hundred level COAS classes that IU will accept.

If you are not majoring in accounting or finance, or accounting and finance, then just ignore this advice and take the three-hundred levels after Icore.

[Credit Transfer Service: Admissions: Indiana University](http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/)

I do realize that I took less credits this year than I should’ve, but taking E201 over the summer brings me to 30, and I plan on taking 32 next year, so I’d be on pace. This summer I think I also have an unpaid internship at Bank of America in Schaumburg. It’s not set in stone yet, but my friends dad got me the internship because knows a guy there talked to him and it sounded pretty good. So I would get X498 credit for it right? (I know I can’t apply for it until I have 26 credits, which makes it kind of a pain) My friend (who is doing the internship with me) said it sounded like it was only a few days a week, so I guess I would have time for another class, but my dad keeps bugging me to get a job that makes me some money.

As for the international dimension, I was planning on going abroad next summer, since I don’t want to do a full semester. I was thinking about doing the London internship (6 cr.)
So if I have 27 credits this year, 32 next year, and 12 combined over the next 2 summers, I’d be at 71 credits going into I-Core.

I am a finance major and was considering adding accounting, but I’m not sure that’s what I want to do, so otherwise I’m thinking I would do technology management. I was also thinking about adding an Econ minor, as that would only require me to take E321 and E322 since E201/202/370 are required anyway, and those classes would be my two 300 level S&H classes. As it stands, I’d only have 6 gen eds done by I-Core which definitely worries me a little bit. I’m thinking this would be my second semester schedule next year: A202, X201, E370, G202, E321, FOLK-F101 or some other A&H/N&M. I feel like that 17 credit schedule is a bit much but with my summer plans, I don’t know what else to do.

The overseas study in London, if it is this program, [Overseas Study: Indiana University](http://iabroad.iu.edu/istart/controllers/ovst/InquiryEngine.cfm?serviceid=ProgramSearchProvider&tab=1&programid=146) , will get the international dimension out of the way, but it won’t help for much else (in terms of Kelley requirements; it will be a great experience, though). Whereas, you can take classes at IU that will “double-count” for distribution option and international dimension requirements at the same time. Also, you have taken two S&H classes already, and plan to take TEL T150? You might want to take something in N&M or A&H next Fall instead of TEL T150 if you are doing the London internship, because the London internship you will give you credit for SOC S101. That would give you four S&H classes at the 100- or 200-level, which would be a waste, since you only need three at that level.

You won’t be eligible for X498, which is two credits, because you have to be a junior or senior to take that class.

You can apply for W499 now, because it only requires that you have completed 24 credits by the time your internship begins. But there is no credit for W499. The only thing you get out of it is that the internship will show up on your transcript. But you need the contact information for the internship, as well as how many hours you will be working. You need a minimum of ten weeks at twenty hours per week to be able to take W498. You have to apply before you start working. Make sure you register for W499 before May 10, or you will get a late registration fee. The class without the late registration fee is only like $17.

E321 and E322 will not work for your three-hundred level S&H classes, as econ classes cannot be applied to the distribution option. From the bulletin: “Students may choose one of two alternatives—the distribution option or a field specialization—to complete the 27-hour Core. I-Core prerequisite courses and Economics courses may not be used to fulfill the 27-hour Core.” Your 300-level classes have to be in some other area of COAS. Here is a list of the possibilities. Again, some COAS classes count for both the distribution option and international dimension at the same time:
[Appendix II: Distribution Courses : Academic Bulletin](http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/college/2010-2011/course-designations/appendix-2.shtml)

So I would look at getting all, or as many as you can, of your remaining 100-level S&H, A&H, and N&M done in summer school, if possible, and doing the two 300-level at Bloomington, since IU won’t accept 300-level classes from cc’s. (And remember that, if you do the London internship, you won’t need another one-hundred level S&H class, since the internship will get you credit for SOC S101.) It is a real pain, but you are only shooting for C’s or higher, so that they will transfer to Kelley. A lot of students that don’t have AP credit going into Bloomington knock out the lower level distribution option classes in summer school in order to concentrate on business classes at IU.

Dammit I wanted to take T160 but if it ultimately doesn’t do anything then I won’t bother. And since S101 will be my last 100 level S&H, what A&Hs and N&Ms should I take? Every single one looks pretty horrible to me to be honest. Like I was saying, I’m thinking about taking F101 because its not that hard and seems tolerable. Other than that, I’m pretty lost.

What do you think of that 17 credit semester? I know it won’t be fun, but will it be impossible? So if I took 3 gen eds next year, I’d be at 7 after London (which I’m pretty set on doing. I’ve never been to another country except Canada when I was 4, and like you said, it’d be a great experience) While not optimal, I’m sure I could get my 2 300-level S&Hs done Jr/Sr year. I could also take my 300 levels next year and leave 2 100 levels for when I’m taking finance classes.

Kind of wish I could do Econ, but if I have to take additional classes it is not at all worth it to me.

Oops, I just remembered that Kelley students cannot even do overseas internships until after they have completed Icore and E202. From the London internship page: “Business majors must be enrolled in or have completed the Business Integrative Core (or equivalent coursework at an IU campus outside Bloomington) and ECON E201 and E202.”

Given that, I would reconsider loading up on N&M and A&H classes at your cc in the next two summers. Get the three one-hundred levels that you need done that way. Is Oakton your cc? Per the credit transfer service, Psychology P101, Astronomy A110 equivalents at Oakton will transfer to IU as N&M credit. You can get A&H credits from four different classes in Oakton’s philosophy department. Can also tranfer for MUSIC Z101 and FINA F100, and lots of others in their English department.

To make things more confusing, the London internship is the only summer internship that does not offer X480 as part of the package, according to the website. [Overseas Study Programs with Internships: Overseas Study: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.indiana.edu/~overseas/programs/iuprograms/internship.shtml) X-480 is a class that goes with many summer internships and counts as a three-hundred level S&H class (even though it is not a COAS class), which would make it useful to you. You can contact Prof R. Thomas Lenz (tlenz@indiana.edu) and ask him if you do London can you get X480 credit. He should know, as he teaches all the X480 sections.

The 17 credits would be a tough semester. But are you still taking E321?

Some A&H and N&M classes you might look at

A&H
FOLK F101
FOLK-F 131

N&M
PSYC P101 – Sklar is a good grader
SOC S110

If you are thinking of going to London, you should really do a full semester as you will get to interact more with British students rather than just go to a summer program which will probably be full of international students. Also, once July hits, a lot of things in London really slow/shut down once the schools are out, so there is more to do in London during term time. Lastly, there is no air conditioning in London, so going to school in hot weather can be pretty miserable. A better option is to come to London during spring semester and then after the term is over, travel around Europe a bit before heading home.

bthomp1,

We need to keep you on this forum, at least, until 2017 when my youngest son graduate from Kelley.;)

I’m pretty set on doing a summer program, since I don’t think I want to spend a whole semester abroad, plus then it would take me more than 4 years if I want to double major. If London isn’t that great in the summer and I don’t get X480 credit, then I’d rather do a different program. I like the idea of having an internship while studying abroad, as well as not having to take any language classes to do it, so Sydney sounds like a good alternative ([Overseas Study: Indiana University](http://iabroad.iu.edu/istart/controllers/ovst/InquiryEngine.cfm?serviceid=ProgramSearchProvider&tab=1&programid=196)). I get X480 credit, but it doesn’t look like the other class transfers as anything. It seems like the deal is you have to have completed both Econs and at least registered for I-Core. From that Sydney site: “have completed (or will complete) E201, E202 and the Business Integrative Core”. If you had to wait until after I-Core, hardly anybody would do those summer programs, since most get an internship here.

I won’t take E321 since it doesn’t count for the distribution option. I will probably take T160 in the fall, since now I won’t have another 100 level S&H if I do Sydney, and then would take probably F101 and S110 in the spring, or a 300 level S&H to get it out of the way, and take the 2 remaining gen eds in my Jr/Sr year. (I already took P101, by the way) I’d like to get another one done this summer but with Econ, the internship ~3 days a week, and potentially a paid job 2-3 days a week, I don’t see me having any time without sacrificing the already limited free time I will have.

You have to have actually completed Icore in order to do an overseas program through Kelley. It is not enough to just be registered for Icore. The bulletin says that “Typically, business students participate in these programs during the junior or senior year. The Integrative Core and ECON-E 202 are prerequisites for participation in Kelley School overseas study programs…”

The majority of Kelley students that do overseas programs through Kelley are taking a whole semester of classes in the Spring semester of their junior year, after completing Icore, (often have the international business co-major, which you don’t see much in finance and accounting majors) and this is not an attractive option at all for finance and accounting majors, as Kelley will not accept 300-level accounting and finance classes credit from any school but IUB. Summer accounting internships are few in London and Sydney, and finance internships are competetive in London and Sydney. Most finance and accounting majors want their summer internship after junior year to be paid and with known US companies. And if they go overseas to study, they tend to do an extra semester in Bloomington since overseas study doesn’t help with 300-level finance and accounting classes.

The first four students in this blog are juniors. The first two are non-finance majors, and they are overseas right now. The second two are finance majors, and they are in Bloomington. Not a big sample, but it is typical for overseas study by major. <a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley;

bthomp - what is W499 and how does one apply for it?

Here is the page for W99 & X498: https://ucso.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/students/brochures/InternshipReportingbrochure.cfm

We talked about X498 in X220, and Dayton said that there are no requirements for it, and I also went to the USCO and they said the same thing. So that’s what I’m applying for as soon as I get the necessary details since it’s for credit. They said the application deadline is like June 15th to apply.

Thanks toffa813.

If your son does the for-credit internship, and he takes more than 15 credits worth of other classes in the Fall, the two credits from the internship will take him over 17 credits, and he will have to pay the instate or OOS per credit rate for each credit over 17.

Appreciate that information.

What’s the rule on online classes? I can’t take E201 but I can take gen eds? Because my advisor said the admissions office may not know if it was online, but I called Oakton and they said that my transcript would say online. So I was thinking about doing an online gen ed this summer instead if I could.

But it really comes down to how bad E201 really is. I know it won’t be easy, but at the same time I think I could handle it. Or is it worth sitting in class for 3:15 twice a week for eight weeks during the summer. Either way, I lose.

E201 at IU isn’t that hard. Take prof. Peter Olson and the material and tests are really straightforward and it’s an easy B.

Olson is probably the easiest grader for E201, but I wouldn’t call it an easy B. I think all the sections have the same final. I don’t know about the midterms or other possible tests. Overall, about one-third of students taking E201 get a B or higher. The tests at IU are probably a lot harder than you would get at a cc. CC tests usually involve defining terms and such, whereas the micro and macro tests at IU you are applying the concepts to see how they affect outcomes, which is much harder. Here are some sample micro tests from IU to give an idea of the format. I think Kelley lets you take two online distribution option classes, but no Icore prerequistes.
