Sophomore on campus Housing

I want to live on campus next year as a sophomore, because it is more convenient and I don't have anyone I know I would want to live with. I am aware that the process to apply for on campus housing begins on Monday. How easy is it to get on campus housing for Sophomore year and where is the easiest place to get housing? I would prefer an apartment style dorm or a suite style. My first choice is Maxcy but I have heard that it's really hard to get in to that dorm. Are there any ways that i might have a better chance of getting on campus housing next year, or is it just luck? Thanks!

I think if you have a roommate chosen, it increases your chances. Also, maybe write a compelling application for your chosen living learning community. My son got on-campus housing for his sophomore year (Preston) but then turned it down b/c he wanted to live in an apartment with his buddies… but now he wants to live back on campus for his junior year next year (go figure).

So… (sorry to hijack your thread) … My questions to the group are, what are the chances of a junior male getting on campus housing next year? And do honors students have a better chance than others, even if they don’t have a roommate chosen? - that question is re: my freshman daughter who is in the honors dorm currently and wants to stay there next year.

They change the process every year, but imo, I think you’d have a better chance of getting something on campus if you don’t have a roommate chosen. It’s a lot easier to find a room with one bed open, than a room with two open beds.

I think getting on campus housing at all is pretty tough. I think honors students have it slightly easier, but at the same time, there are only so many slots available and not everyone gets one.

I know my sophomore year, I got on campus housing through a lottery and the majority of people I talked to could not get any on-campus housing. The only person I know who did had an “in” with someone high up in Housing. I think last year was particularly rough as well, because the woman’s quad was offline.

I would definitely say apply and see what happens, but also be looking at off-campus options. You may not have a choice.

Coleman, in general honors gives its students more upper-classman capacity, so honors students have a better chance of staying on campus for sophomore year, especially if you want to stay in HR. Next year they are redoing Legare and Rutledge and only one will be available (shifting students from one to other mid-year) but to make up room they are allocating some rooms in new dorm down by business school. Last year, students that applied were told they had a space or not. But then they still had to pick a room. Evidently some changed their minds and after honors rooms assigned there actually were some open spots and they did give honors students another shot at them before using them for exchange students. So with regards to son, if he doesn’t have a roommate preference and can delay committing to off-campus housing, he might get a place.

Hopefully the fact that this new dorm is opening and if they don’t take any regular dorms off-line (I think Bates is getting upgraded at some point) then housing might be a little more available than in past few years.
