Hey! I'm transferring to Cornell in the fall and was wondering what I should be taking as a sophomore biology major, who's also pre-med. I finished Intro Bio, Intro Chem and Calc at my old school. I also have to fulfill one more writing requirement and one more humanities requirement. I'll be entering as a "second semester sophomore" but it isn't a big deal if I graduate in less than 3 years so I'm not in a rush to cram my schedule and am looking for a smooth transition into Cornell from a course load standpoint. One thing that I'm sort of confused about is how there are several specific types of one general class (like different kinds of Intro Physics classes) so i'm not really sure which one to take. Thanks for your help!

well i’m also a pre med biology major but not an external transfer but my schedule for my sophomore year was

Fall:
Chem 357 - Orgo I
Physics 101
Anthr 256
Psych 101
Astro 101
BioEE 278

Spring:
Chem 358 Orgo II
Physics 102
BioMI 290 General microbiology lecture
Chem 251 orgo lab
Hort 102
Engri 127 intro to entrepeneurship

Physics 101/102 is the autotutorial one. It definitely has more work but in exchange i believe it’s easier to get a higher grade. You have more control over your grades since you can take each exam 3 times and you can schedule it, so if you had a huge insane stomachache during one day you can just take it on another day.

I always try to at least put in 1 class that i’m interested in and not for requirements. In fall it was Astro 101, great class and psych 101, interesting, but lots of work. and in Spring it’s hort 102 and engri 127, both good classes.

if you’re not a chem major do physics 101, it’s obnoxiously easy

wow thats 6 classes… Iono if I can take on 6 classes… Pre med students usually take 6 classes? I was more thinking of at least 4 or 5 classes O_o…

I’m in the same boat as you are. When I first applied to Cornell I was given a guarantee transfer and I am going to be entering this fall. But I am also a Biology Major and kind of in the dark as to what I should be taking. I was thinking of waiting to speak with my adviser prior to making any concrete decisions about classes

i think you get more help from here than advisor but it doesn’t hurt. some advisors have more knowledge than others. my advisor actually was against me takign physics 101/102. He said the lecture one was easier. good thing i didn’t listen hahaha

you dont need to take 6 classes. premed has a ton of requirements, so if you want to take a lot of electives early on, you may have to take more than 4 classes to fulfill core requirements and take some fun courses too. i never took more than 5 per semester.
