I am currently a sophomore at JMU after transferring there from Virginia Tech. I had a 3.4 at Tech and I had a 3.9 last semester at JMU. I know it seems like Im jumping around here from school to school, but as I have grown older, I have seen myself caring more and more about my educational opportunities and have found that neither JMU or Tech have the best resources to fulfill my drive. I would rather be at an institution where more people I come in contact with generally care about making the most of their education, as I have come to do. First of all, do I have a slight chance of acceptance? If I do, I feel the necessity to try. Secondly, would already being at two school put me at a disadvantage? Like showing the admissions representatives that I don't know what I want? Or could I turn it in to a positive by explaining that I have first hand knowledge of what I am not getting from those schools that I could get at UVA? Thanks to anyone who bothered to read my rant...

To be simple, should I try?

If you think UVa is a good fit, you should try. You never know if they’ll admit you or not, and you’ll never know if come May you’ll still want to attend. Just make sure your essays show where your heart is at. I would avoid saying “I want to transfer because UVa is a better school”, but instead, concentrate on why is it a better school for you.

Thanks for the reply, I understand that one has to articulate the essays to avoid “school bashing” and “want to move up in the rankings” remarks. Ive been spending a lot of time on those essays, to make them more personal, and to avoid the generic statements adcoms must see all the time (“Uva has been my dream school since I was a kid”). Its a wait and see game, Im just glad I have a shot this time (in high school my grades and SAT scores were good, but probably not up to Uva standards). Atleast if I get in, I would likely be the only person to have gone to JMU and Tech as well…all I can do is hope.
