Sophomore Transfer?

I really wanted to go to UIUC, but was rejected. I expected it since my stats are very low compared to their average, but I was thinking about trying to transfer there for my sophomore year. I was wondering how much do they look at your high school transcript and ACT scores for transfer students?
I'm attending NIU(Northern Illinois) for my freshmen year. I'm currently undecided, but I'm thinking of majoring in Psychology.

if you have under 60 credits they will look into your high school stats and ACT scores pretty heavily. You definitely wouldnt have more than 60 by soph. year, so i guess you can count on them looking at it, or wait till you get 60 (almost junior year for most) and transfer then.

When you do have 60 credits you shouldnt even need to send your ACT, but i think a highschool transcript is always required to assess the foreign language reuirement.

No, I talked to the counselor at UIUC. They don't really look at your ACT stuff. What they really care about is how you do during your first two years in college i.e. grades and how you will contribute to UIUC.

^ he or she talking about transferring in after only one year of college though. Which means he or she will need to apply next Jan to transfer the following fall. Only one semester of grades will be submitted to UIUC (apprx 15 credits) to make their decisions (say this person began college in September 06, they would apply Jan 07 by submitting first semester grades, in order to transfer the following Fall (07), spring 07 grades wont be used to determine admission).

If when considering soph. transfer students they only considered your college work (which is only 1 semester for blue147!) they would have almost nothing to go on. They absolutely consider your ACT and high school stats if you do not have 30 credits completed BY THE TIME YOU APPLY (not by the time you attend). That doesn't mean they wont also look at the college work you DO have done, it just means it's not going to be just that.

Blue147: At the time you apply you are only gonna have about 15 credits done. So this does apply to you.

Here is the official admissions website confirming everything i have just said: http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/future/faq/transfer.html

Should I retake the ACT to help my chances?

just tell us what you got

they'll pretty much either reject you when they get your application if your stats are too low or if the program is closed, or ask you to send your spring transcript in.

Yeah, thats a plus at least. Being a lower division applicant (soph) you probably won't have to wait for April for the bad news. ....If it's bad news.

but if they ask for your spring grades theyll probably just defer your admission until then...youll be waiting until may then

My ACT score was a 19. I'm planning on taking it again this June.

If its an option still to retake it. ...Retake it. 19 is pretty low for UIUC.

Either that or wait till you have 30 credits at another university, and then they aren't supposed to be able to use it against you.

Frankly, you may not be able to handle UIUC. A 19 is very low and way below UIUC's average. Just my opinion.

i agree w/ elleo. I know this girl who got a 20 and kep on complaining on how she did not get into UIUC. I knew her....and believe me she would have failed out of first semester.....

hmmm...well I think i'll retake the ACT. I know I can't get in with a 19. A standardized test won't stop me.

As to transfering, UIUC highly prefers junior year transfers over those trying to transfer earlier. In fact, engineering, business and departments of other colleges generally require that you wait to junior year to transfer. If you apply to transfer before junior year, you should assume your chances of rejection are about 95%. ACT or SAT score is important if trying to transfer before junior year; it is not considered if trying to transfer junior year. Psychology is one of the hardest mjors to transfer into (it generally does not have many openings for transfer students).

I may be wrong but I don't think they will accept your new ACT score taken while you are already in college.

OK, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. I will apply as a junior transfer. All I have to do is keep my GPA up and see what courses are equivalent to UIUC's, but I still need to pick my major. That's the hard part for me. I'm stuck between Politcal Science and Psychology. My first two yrs. of college should be interesting.
