Sophomore year and beyond scholarships

My DD is entering her 2nd semester freshman year. In high school she was a fairly average student, her GPA was a 3.5 and her ACT was horrible. She never has done well on the standarized type of tests. With that said, she has pulled it together and managed to get a 4.0 her first semester. She had 17 credits and worked really hard to achieve that. I know it is early but she is off to a great start. She received one small, non-renewable scholarship this year. Are there any other scholarships out there that now that her grades have improved so much? I know that most scholarships are for incoming freshman but anyone aware of anything as the years progress. We have tried hard to save the $ to pay all 4 years but are coming up short. She will be working summers to help out too. But it would so help to find a few scholarships out there if possible.

Scholarships for continuing students are very hard to find. They’re mostly found at the school itself from within the major dept. So, your D should look there.

Since your D is only a frosh and has only completed one semester, it may be hard to win a dept scholarship. Your D may have to take out a student loan to make up for any shortfall.

Since it sounds like you have a lot saved, but not enough to fully-fund 4 years, if your D were to borrow the max Stafford amounts, would that help?

frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

It’s not too late to get a 5500 loan for THIS year. Fill out FAFSA (using the one for LAST year) and submit. Shouldn’t take long for school to process.

It took her awhile to catch on to how teachers test and how to prepare for exams. I think she has it now but it seems too late which is a shame to get merit scholarships. I wish we would have known in high school that unless you go in with scholarships you probably will not get them after that. She is trying for her department scholarship but it is only $1000. But every little bit helps out so much.

Yes, this is often misunderstood by people. the issue is that schools give big merit to incoming frosh so that they can report their stats for ranking purposes. There’s not much incentive to give much money to continuing students. Plus, so many kids have high GPAs these days in college, that it would be very difficult to give out merit to all of these kids.
