Outside scholarships for Non-freshmen

My D is a freshman in college. She has some outside scholarships given to her but only for 1 year. There were 1 or 2 outside scholarships offered to her for more than 1 year but only if she attended an In-state school and she didn't .

My question is, in the coming years, are there organization that offer scholarships ? I search on the net but there is practically no info on that.

Most outside scholarships are for entering fr, few are for continuing students. She should check with her college or major department to see if they have merit for current students.

Thanks, my D does have a 4 yr scholarship from her school. I was just hoping we’d get some more from outside.

Her 4 yr scholarship is likely a school-wide one, many individual departments have merit for continuing students, they are usually for smaller amounts but still helpful.

I agree with entomom. My D received some $3K scholarships during her time at school through her dept.

Prospective students reading this thead who might be getting “one year only merit scholarships” should take notice. (most private scholarships are only for one year and ONLY for incoming frosh).

If you can only afford your school after applying those “one year only awards” then pick another school. (not saying that this is the case with the OP, but it is the case with a good number of kids…they calculate affordability based on one year awards)

There just aren’t many outside entities that provided scholarships for continuing students. They just don’t seem to have the motivation to fund those.

There are sometimes small scholarships from one’s major dept, but often you need to be a rising junior and/or the top student for that major. My own kids each got a ONE time dept award - so only good for senior year of college. One got $800 (math dept), the other got around $2000 (eng’g dept). Those were the only add’l awards that they got after being incoming frosh. Most depts do not have the funds to be awarding multi-year awards, nor do most have funds to award to more than a couple of top students.

My daughter is a sophomore and received a merit award in her major as a freshman. This year she received another merit award from her department also. We were very surprised when the original award also renewed, so now she is getting a nice chunk of money from her department. There is no guarantee of this, but in some departments they will renew the departmental awards if the student is continuing to show they are deserving, by their GPA and accomplishments. At least, that’s how it works at D’s school and department.
