I'm a sophomore and I had gotten a 164 on my PSAT this year. I know that my scores suck, but I am eager to improve them.

Over my Christmas break I can be extremely sure that my Writing score has improve to the 60s range because ever since I had gotten all of the improving sentences right on the McGraw Hill's SAT, I have started to get at least 4 or less errors on the improving sentence questions in BB.

However, the only obstacle that is my way is the Critical Reading; I just can't seem to bring my score of 50 on the reading up to the high 50s or the 60s. Please give me some advice. I have at most 4 more practice tests left on tHE BB and 3 left on the PR and I really don't want to exhaust them.

For math, I was rushing on the test day and so I'm not worry about it that much.

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON THE CRITICAL READING. THANK YOU

Study vocab. Direct Hits is a pretty good series of books to study.

However, the best way really is to take more practice tests. Since you’re a sophomore, I’d wait until summer before junior year before starting to study again.

But what about reading the long passages that contain at lease 13 questions. How do you tackle them?

Just keep on doing the passages! Don’t give up! One day it will click.

Hello, Kevin!

I took the PSAT this year on a Wednesday, and my score breakdown was:

Math: 73
Writing: 72
Reading: 73
Total: 218

However, this is a huge improvement over my scores from last year (M: 65, R: 63, W: 63)

For me, the thing that helped me improve my scores the most for the math and writing sections was simple repetition. However, this was NOT the case for the PSAT reading section. I’m a naturally good reader, but because I was so committed this year to getting a National Merit Semi-Finalist score, I knew I had to find a new way to practice it. When I looked at my score sheet from Sophomore year, I noticed that it was the vocab section that had killed me. Now, let me give you some advice for what I did for each of the two different reading sections:

Vocab/Sentence Completion: It might sound silly, but my iPod was a huge help for this section. A couple of months before this year’s October PSAT, I downloaded the “SAT Vocab App”. On the iPod application, it quizzes you over new vocabulary as often as you would like. I learned an amazing amount of new SAT vocabulary words in a matter of weeks and improved my score in that category by a substantial amount.

Reading Comprehension Section: This section, in my opinion, is the hardest SAT section to study for. My biggest recommendation would be to read old text, such as writings from the Bible, Qur’an or Shakespeare, and attempt to paraphrase and read as quickly as possible. Simply by reading one or two pages a night and paraphrasing the text, you’ll see your comprehension score increase dramatically.

Hope I helped! If you have any questions as to what I did to improve my scores on the math and writing sections, feel free to ask. :)
