Sororities (rush week, racism, money, etc)

I’m planning on going to SDSU and I really wanna rush a sorority but I had a few questions.

If anyone goes to SDSU can you please tell me how competitive it is to get into a sorority? Also, I’m Persian and I’m assuming many middle eastern people don’t join sororities so what can I expect when it comes to acceptance? I’ve heard a few concerning things regarding SDSU sororities and ethnicity.

I would have to pay semester fees to be in the sorority but what are these going to? I won’t be living in the sorority house since I have an apartment in San Diego so I wanted to know what exactly I’m paying for (and please don’t say “friends”).

I was also wondering why rush week is considered so stressful? If someone could give me an overview of what goes on during the week, that’d be great.
Also, are many sororities and fraternities close to each other? Do they hang out a lot together?

I’m not the biggest partier so I’m not sure how that will affect my experience in a sorority.
I’ve just never really had a solid group of friends that support me unconditionally and that’s what I’m looking for.
Any other insight someone could give me on sororities would be amazing.

Thanks so much

Your school should provide some basic information on rusing. Usually living in a sorority house is optional and often reserved for seniors.

The best thing you can do is talk to alumni.

Sororities at SDSU are not as competitive as other California schools such as USC. Also, being Persian should not affect you in being accepted. A good amount of sororites at SDSU are pretty diverse, you should have no trouble finding a place you will fit in and feel comfortable at. Rush week is considered stressful because of all the events you have to attend on top of schoolwork and the emotional and physical toll it takes on you, but it really helps you figure out which sorority is right for you. Check the SDSU Panhellenic website for details on recruitment for fall it will give you all the details you need for now and during the first meeting, they will go over all of rush week for you. One thing I will say though is that most SDSU sororities are pretty party focused and require you to attend a certain amount of parties (typically frat parties) to not be fined. People, however, tend to not push anything on you that you are uncomfortable with (you won’t be forced to drink or anything else if you do not want to). Being in a sorority at SDSU will help you to meet tons of people especially if you are living off campus and commuting.
