Sorority life at USC vs. UC

I'm thinking about UCSD, or USC

I'm very exited about USC but it's a private school and much more expensive :(
Is it really worth it? Whats it like compared to the Univeristy of Cal. unis?

I'm an international student and i dont really know what the odds are to enroll to any of them... (I guess they have number of studnets that they'll have to "fill" with international students?). Is it easier to get exepted to UC or USC?
I know the competion is generally much harder at USC...

I really want to join a sorority - which one of these school has the largest/best greek-community? Is it easy to get rejected while rushing a sorority?

don't quote me on this but i don't think UCSD has any greek life. The only party scene is either at neighboring schools, clubs, or down in mexico (students go down there to party where the legal drinking age is 18).

For an International, USC is only marginally more expensive. USC would be "about" $50,000/year while a UC would be "about" $46,000/year.

also, isn't USC a much better school than UCSD?

not really ^. usc is just below ucla and ucsd is almost as good as ucla. Go to USC if you want a greek life. It is amazing there. UCSD is kind of boring

Okey...
I just saw that CC has its own ranking system and San Diego State Univeristy's greek life got an A+.
Any one that know somethin 'bout that?

But UCSD is better acvademically right? 'cous i'm thinkin about major in ethology- biology...

San Diego State does have a pretty big greek scene. Overall, San Diego State has lower academics than UCSD but its more social.

UCSD is fairly hard to get in to, like someone else said, almost as hard as UCLA.

Okey, but which of USC and SDSU is best both socialy and academiclly?

I want a fun college experience but I also want an respected degree...

when you think of top colleges in california its berkely, stanford, cal tech and usc. academically USC is overall a lot better than ucsd, and if ur thinkin of doing greek life, let me tell u as someone who goes to usc, our party/social scene is almost unrivaled. you want a challenging schedule and a crazy fun time, usc is perfect for u. and we have the highest amount of international students at our school in the united states so u can see that its not only americans who love usc

I agree with Fowora on this USC is a much better school.

Hmm... but it's also much more expensive, right?

If you are talking about the UCs (UCSD, for example), then NO, USC is not significantly more expensive for out-of-state. (Approx $46,000/year-UC vs. approx $50,000-USC)

SDSU would be less expensive (but not in the same category academically) at about $35,000/year for out-of-state.

Hopefully you are planning ahead for applications you will submit next year, because the application periods for the UCs and CSUs have closed for this year.

hah yeah, i'm planning for 2010.. :)

But it's 50,000

The figures I gave are approximations for a full year including room and board. Be sure to check each school's website for specifics. Good luck next year!

OMG SofiaJD!!! I have the EXACT same dilemma!!! I’m an international student as well, and I’m reeeally in love with USC. But it’s kinda expensive yes. At least compared to SDSU which is like half the price.

I want to go to college in California, and I am for sure rushing. So my future college HAS to have great Greek life. As everyone knows, USC has that, but it seems like SDSU has too actually. So even though I’m totally in love with USC, I’m learing to like SDSU better and better. Even though it’s not a private school and a state university as well, it seems like a pretty good one, right?

BTW, I’m interested in management and communications.
How’s your college plans working out, SofiaJD? :)

Yeah I think it’s safe to say SDSU has greek life

I currently go to USC and I’m in a sorority as an international student.
I was accepted to UCSD also but I ended up choosing USC because it was a better fit for me. I liked the campus more because it was in LA and the UCSD campus seemed really gloomy for some reason. I talked to current students and found myself a better fit in LA. Since I’m also an international student, the tuition wasn’t too different. I can’t say much for SDSU…haven’t visited or even applied.

PM me if you have any questions!

I like USC better than SDSU too… I was just kinda thrilled at the moment to find a cheaper school that looked kinda good. But I’ve heard that it’s not? I talked to my host sister (who lives in LA) about it, and even though her whole family is Bruin, she would still reccommend USC over SDSU. And it’s not like I didn’t already know that though… I mean, hello, USC had such a great reputation. But I was just scared that dream has to go, considering I have to save up thousands of dollars in 1 1/2 years… But if I get the opportunity, I’ll DEF pick USC, 'cause I really like it.

tnn01, as an international student, how was it to apply? I mean, with the whole differences in grade systems and stuff? Where you from btw? :)

Oh, sorry, you were talking about UCSD… :stuck_out_tongue: Hah, but anyways, kinda the same deal I guess.
