So I'm going to be a college freshman in the fall and I had a couple of questions about sororities. Are they hard to get into? Are they worth the time? and also is being in a sorority time consuming? Thanks!

It totally depends on the Greek climate at your school. Generally, if your school is part of the SEC, you need at least one recommendation for each group, and it’s very hard to get in. However, there are other schools where the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

Being in a sorority can be fairly time consuming, especially during pledging. It takes up less time as you get older, though.

I disagree with the “very hard” to get in part. In some sororities this could be the case. But it is worth rushing and seeing if you fit in somewhere (you have nothing to lose). Just be nice, friendly, and charismatic about the sorority when rushing and you WILL get a bid somewhere

I’m heavily involved in Greek Life, so this post may be very biased.

I think it’s definitely worth a try; sign up for formal recruitment.

Here’s the general gist of it:

It’s very time consuming, but if you end up with a good fit, it’ll be worth it. Your sorority will be a significant part of your college life, possibly even to the level of defining it if you are heavily involved.

Because of the “fit” issue, that’s why there’s a recruitment process instead of just plainly joining. It’s a mutual selection process which does as much as possible to ensure that you are a good fit for the sorority you end up in, if any.

In any situation, if you are good fit for a sorority, it should forward your goals instead of interfere with them, even if time consuming.
