Hi there, so I was rejected from my dream school Cornell on Thursday but luckily I had applied EA to Fordham as well which I'm pretty happy about b/c if I can't go to Cornell I can see myself really happy at Fordham. So here it goes:

-29 ACT but 31 superscored, I'm not aware of whether or not Fordham superscores so I didn't send all official scores but I have 3 29s that show up on my transcript so at least I'm consistent? ;)
-rank 3rd out of 690
-gpa 4.0uw, 4.8w
-first generation female from suburban Ohio
-speak fluent Romanian with moderate Spanish
---I figured that might help since I'm going to do International Studies that's only at LC
-pretty awesome rec letters, ranked as top 1% in all areas except like 3 where I was given top 5% like confidence, I'm paranoid, haha
-ECs are not many b/c I had to take care of my younger brother since my parents worked the 2nd and 3rd shifts my freshman and soph years so no ECs for those years at all but the ones I do have now are:
-Spanish club secretary (11th) and now president
-Link Crew Leader (freshman mentor) 11,12
-Founder of AP Book Club 12
-Volunteered at the Cleveland Zoo this past summer 11-12
-Girls State Delegate- I put this under state honors though 11
-Founder of the AP Book club 12
-Write a political blog 11-12

Questions:
-Will it be more competitive to get in at LC since my major, International Studies, is only offered at LC?
-How safe is LC? My parents are really worried about an 18 year old girl living in NYC by herself coming from suburban Ohio. I personally am not afraid since I've heard good things about the campus and I'm not stupid to go off-campus on my own or anything but is it gated or something though?
-I've heard the food is really bad, has it improved in the past few years? Why do people say it's so bad?
-I still have my heart in Ithaca somewhat, I might apply as a transfer or for grad school to Cornell. Will Fordham help me achieve this if I do well or will I still be viewed upon negatively in comparison to say a student from Boston College or Amherst, etc trying to do the same thing?

Whew, sorry, I know that was a lot. Thanks for your help ahead of time!

I visited LC but applied for RH, but I just want you to know that Fordham LC is located in a very nice area of Manhattan – the Upper West Side – very affluent and calm. I think you’ll feel pretty safe there, but I don’t know what your personal expectations of the area are.

EDIT: I don’t remember it being gated, but there is a significant amount of security, and you can’t just walk into the dorms–security is there, and you need to swipe an ID or something.

Unoriginal- Ok great, thanks! I didn’t really expect anything else, I figured Fordham must be pretty safe and anyone should be safe anywhere with common sense, it’s just my parents who are paranoid, you know how it goes… lol

dowzerw- Thanks, good luck to her as well! What major/campus? That’d be cool if we met!

When most people think of Fordham, it seems they think mostly about the RH campus, which is, admittedly, in a less-than-stellar part of the Bronx. If/when you and your parents visit LC, I’m sure both of you will be pleasantly surprised at how awesome LC’s area is!

A few things: You will get into LC. So relax. Will they scholarship you? Don’t know. LC is a safe part of the city. You learn the ropes quickly and the other students will tell you the do’s and don’t’s of life in NYC. Never go clubbing alone. Etc.

While LC has some programs that RH does not, RH has a combined Economics, PoliSci and International Relations major that is awesome. You can take classes at either campus. Or if you prefer a classic campus atmosphere and want to transfer, that is possible as well.

Rose Hill is gated. Its very safe. The area around it is not as bad as some people say, but the key is to go in groups and never alone at night if you venture anywhere off campus. Little Italy has some of the best Italian restaurants in all of New York and they aren’t outrageously expensive either. A substantial part of their business comes from the Fordham community so they are not going to do anything to harm Fordham people.

Freshmen often get transferitis…happens everywhere. Even at Cornell. And sometimes your “dream school” isn’t all that dreamy. I only recommend transfers for compelling situations. As far as getting into graduate school from Fordham…rest assured that Fordham students do very, very well getting into top programs around the country. As well as medical school and law school.

So just relax. If you come to Fordham, then enjoy the school, the people and the city. Its a great experience.

Haha good! RH is stunning and I wish I could live there but my major is only offered at LC. I’m kind of bummed because I want an actual typical collegian campus but what can I do. I think it being in Manhattan makes up for it!
